It seems that Microsoft’s “iPod Killer” 30GB Zune players are all failing in unison as the New Year approaches across the globe for some reason. On startup, as the device boots, it seems to hang at the last bit of the boot process — the worst part is that the devices all seem to have reset themselves last night in unison and no amount of hard resetting is restoring them to functional state.
To get an idea of how wide-spread the issue is, the official Zune Support Forums and the community forums are busting at the seams with people reporting their 30GB models failing left and right.
We all knew Vista sucked… pretty bad… but this is really something, to get unified hardware failure in sync across the globe. That’s impressive.
Update #1: Reader Skazm posted a fix on how to hard-reset your Zune, this isn’t for the weak of heart though:
To do this, use a small screwdriver to pop off the plastic shielding where the zune cable plugs into and remove the two screws on either side of the plug. Next pop the cover off and locate the battery plug at the top left corner of the zune, using your screw driver, pop the cable connection half way off, and do this to the other plug on the right side. Wait 3 seconds, then push down the right connector and then the left battery connecter. Your zune should start up immediately. Press the backing of the zune down (make sure headphone jack is aligned) and put the screws and cover back in place.

“Your zune will need a “hard reset.”

It’s an easy process but if you’re unsure don’t attempt it if you think you’ll screw it or something.

Not pretty, but it might help those of you who have this problem.

There was a bug in the firmware that had issues with the last day of a leap year. “If you left your Zune plugged in yesterday, it will still be powered up and stuck in yesterday’s boot screen. You’ll have to let the battery drain and have it restart the boot sequence now that the 2009 date is here.”
