Wii: Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is a “Rails” Gun Game

The GameSpot crew got some time to play the new Resident Evil on the Wii, and what they found out is that it’s a “on rails” (meaning you don’t control movement, like from the old Sega arcade-shooter games and you progress by killing baddies but the camera will swing you towards the action and make you progress).

For a lot of people going “Oh jesus lame”, the good news is that the game covers information from RE 0, 1, 2 and 3, with RE 4 getting ported to the Wii this year as well. So for what they lack in control and immersion in Umbrella Chronicles they will make up with sheer content it sounds like.

A comment I’ve seen made by quite a few folks so far is just how moody the game looks, which is hard to say for a RE series game, but the game really does look extremely moody and dark:

It looks like they are going with a very gray tone and blowing everything out with an HDR-like effect. It helps to make the game look better on the last-last-gen hardware inside the Wii, so let’s see how it plays out.

I’m personally getting sick of the shit visuals from the Wii… gameplay is great, but if I sigh ever time I see a boxy model or 64×64 texture stretched over something, it really pulls me out of the immersive experience.
