Ok… get it out of your system… just go ahead… say it… type every word using numbers, use “lolz” like 10 times, and call me a fag…

What’s that? You don’t think it’s necessary for me to take a breather before I begin? I’d encourage you to read the comments for my Halo 3 analysis then. The apparent levels of faggitry and n00bness is something to behold.

ANYWAY…

So Call of Duty 4 is one of the most anticipated FPSs for this holiday season and it’s finally here… the average scores so far for the game are ridiculously high… like “The Bible is pretty cool, but COD4 FUCKING ROX!! -God” high… like “Have these people played other games before?” high… like “Are these reviewers able to see anything with their heads so far up eachother’s asses?” high.

I’m all for good games, even perfect games… but 10/10 and 95/100 from every reviewer out there? Bitch please.

I’ve played Infinity Ward’s games before, so have a lot of you, and you know that they are insanely ambient with excellent smoke effects (yes, I’m actually calling out the quality of the smoke effects cause they rock) but one think you will undoubtedly remember from every other Call of Duty are the 3 following things that drive me nuts:

  1. The world is not physical. Grenades may bounce, but that’s about it. You cannot blow walls down, chip away at cover and destroy it like in Blacksite or Stanglehold. You cannot blow up doors, crates, supports or anything else in the world that looks like it should react to a rocket. Also forget about dead bodies being physical, like blowing away after a sniper shot to the face. They just die and become concretely part of the environment.
  2. The enemies are not intelligent like in Crysis/Half-Life/etc, there is just a fuck-ton of them. Don’t expect much more than blind, scripted firing from your squad either.
  3. There is a total lack of gore.

#1 and #2 are almost always disguised in the Call of Duty games by the constant onslaught of action and attacking baddies and wave after wave of dudes. COD4 is no different.

A new annoyance I am officially adding to any shooter now is:

  1. A complete lack of cover system

I’m sorry, I can no longer play FPSs without a cover system. I need the comfort knowing I’m locked onto something safe (Gears of War, Rainbow Six Vegas). I need to know that just because the geometry for my hand is sticking out and I don’t know it, I’m going to get raped by machine gun fire.

Most importantly… I NEED to be able to see what I’m fucking shooting at. The behind-the-head thing worked for a long time, until intese firefights made it obvious very quickly how shitty that works when you are trying to take cover… because you end up adjusting your camera to see your enemy, which in turn changes your body’s orientation and exposes. No sir-e-bob… fuck that, I want a cover system.

When I look at the graphics for COD4, there is no getting around it… the game looks phenomenal. No one is arguing that the game doesn’t look good… I’m arguing that I won’t be picking it up because it’s a next-gen looking game, with last-gen gameplay mechanics.

Did I mention that the single player can be burned through in under 5 hrs? Oh yes… it has insanely complex multiplayer, similar to the Halo 3 approach of using the single player as filler and getting the real purpose of the game out: multiplayer…. unfortunately the game does not include any co-op play… nixing the replayability of the single player campaign.

So if you dig story lines like I do, and don’t dig the crazy competative online play that much, I’d suggest moving on to one of the other 111 games releasing before Christmas instead.

I’m currently in “waiting” mode to see how:

  • Assassin’s Creed
  • Crysis
  •  Kane & Lynch

do in the reviews. Oh, and Fuck Mario Galaxy… I hate you Nintendo and I hate your stupid characters. For some reason every time you release something everyone turns into a star-struck anime girl that can’t WAIT to get their hands on the cute adorable little characters and play “collect stars” with the Wiimote… GIRL POWER!

Love Hina

So in closing… I’m not getting Call of Duty 4, even though it looks really pretty. If the game had destructible environments and a bit of a more physical world (1 of the reasons it probably runs at such a smooth framerate) and a bit more gore to make it more realistic, along with co-op, I’d be all over that game.

But it doesn’t… so I’m not.

After all, Mass Effect on the 20th… who even cares what happens after that comes out? I hear Christmas is in December some time…

Pff… the things that you say are just silly. Play the game properly and you will get the idea of it. This is the most inovative war shooter i saw fotr the last 3-4 years. So get over it, COD 4 Rox !

  2. Riyad Kalla Says:

Sekk, I think you meant “immersive” and “innovative”… there is nothing “innovative” (read: new) about COD4. It’s the same gameplay mechanics from COD2, just with really pretty graphics.

But I appreciate you saying COD4 Rox… someone had to :D

  3. slomo788 Says:

So fucking true. I can’t say I’m skipping it all together but I certainly agree with almost everything you said. No destuctible environments? No vehicles? 6-hour long campaign? No cover system? That’s disappoiting. Gorgeous graphics, I agree, and at least they had the sense to make you able to shoot through some walls, but of course, no real mayhem. And to be fair, I read that the AI actually is good so it might stick out of the normal COD pile.

  4. Riyad Kalla Says:

here-here slomo788, I even forgot to mention the vehicle thing.

If you do decide to pick it up, let us know what you think. I’m curious what the more balanced gamers think of it, maybe it’s still awesome even with the omissions?

  5. TLM Says:

You’re right in not buying this piece of crap.
    This game blows chunks.
First you spend 50 bucks to buy the piece of crap, beat it in 4.5 hours, then, when you move on to multiplayer, you find people with wallhacks that allow them to see through walls, and aimbots, that give you an instant kill by just pulling the trigger. You don’t even have to aim or have an enemy in your sight. This is a HUGE backwards leap in gaming, or “gaming at it’s worst”.

  6. Riyad Kalla Says:

    TLM,
Dude that sucks, are you serious people are cheating in Multiplayer?

Are you on XBox, PS3 or PC? I wonder if they are gonna release a patch to lock that badboy down.

  7. TLM Says:

I’m playing on pc…or I “was” playing on pc.
At least it taught me a lesson,.. “avoid all COD games from now on”.
Punkbuster is suppose to take care of the cheaters and hackers but people always find ways to work around it.
I’m just going to avoid all online gaming and stick with singleplayer.

  8. Riyad Kalla Says:

TLM that really sucks, I”m sorry to hear that cheaters are already all over the place.

My problem with PC gaming is the abusive-DRM that these publishers shove down our throats to the point that games don’t install/work-right anymore… now it sounds like even if you get past that, you have to content with the cheaters online to even *play* the game you just dropped $50+ on… that really blows.

  9. TLM Says:

I just dropped 60 bucks on Crysis.
It runs great and looks fantastic. Haven’t tried the multiplayer yet,…maybe I’ll just stick to singleplayer.
Another good game I’ve been playing is Bioshock. It’s kind of strange because it all takes place in an unserwater city full of mutants, but it’s fun.
Yes Riyad, sadly I see pc gaming and maybe video gaming as a whole, going the way of the dinosaur if they keep screwing around with DRM and/or other bogus copywrite protection. Sheesh, I can’t even make a back up copy of my games anymore…that sucks.

  10. Riyad Kalla Says:

    TLM,
Keep me posted on Crysis if you get a chance… I don’t have the horse-power on my PC to play it, but it just looked so beautiful. I’m also curious if they pull off the story well, or if it’s all just an excuse for awesome graphics/physics.

As far as DRM… it’s weird isn’t it? It’s almost like we are moving towards a model where we no longer own our own games and instead of renting them with some form of limited usage-rights… in which case I think they should make the stupid things cheaper. Not *more* expensive with less rights to use it.

    Barf.

I think the eventual goal is to push everyone to consoles… they are closed/controlled/tightly integrated units that the manufacturers have complete control over. None of the wild-card stuff that PCs offer up and I think publishers and vendors prefer that.

Just my 2 cents and I can’t say I’m pleased with it… I grew up with the days of PC gaming, sad to see it get chipped away like this.

  11. DawnKiller Says:

I’m really glad i read this… Thanks for saving me 60 bucks man.. i was planning on buying this..i had no idea that the gameplay mechanics were the exact same as COD2… Great graphics mean nothing to me if the gameplay is boring

  12. uscdude Says:

I bought this game a few weeks ago at the sale circuit city had (38bucks or something). A great game. I see your point in having no cover system. It sucks when a guy with no skill gets the upper hand because he is spraying and praying around a corner. This game has way too much of that even inside the scope. The killcam shows how soem people just don’t know how to shoot and just spray and pray. Other times, the bad decision on including perks messes up the game. 2 shots in the leg and someone can die. Juggernaut does not overcome stopping power which is a nuisance. Double-tab is stupid as is martydom

  13. Riyad Kalla Says:

    uscdude,
Thanks for the followup. I had a feeling no cover system in the online play might make the game too much like counter strike (like you said, spray and pray).

Also what did you think of the single player?

  14. AG-Lion Says:

COD4 is COD2 with better graphics. There is nothing ground-breaking or new about it (except the perk and weapon customization). I played COD2 and I swear, it was a dream come true. Now they put COD4 in and now I am totally dissapointed. I feel like I played COD4 before; long before it came out.
And Multiplayer? It’s a complete joke. There is no balance whatsoever. Power Weapons (rpg, claymore, c4, grenade launcher) is abused beyond believe. All you do is spray and pray (smgs). Weapons are overpowered(m16). Perks ruin gameplay (martyrdom, juggernaut, stopping power(stupid power)). And whats worse is… The maps. The maps are complete remakes of the Campaign maps and they are as small as hell.

  15. Ninjaguy Says:

I agree with AG-Lion. Those perks are really annoying and I’m very disappointed that they’re still available in COD5!!!
