Kevin Smith and Harvy Weinstein

For those not in the know, Kevin Smith has apparently wrote a script for a new horror movie called “Red State“.

The script is apparently really dark and not a comedy by a long shot. Weinstein up until this point has funded most (if not all?) of Smith’s projects, but they took a pass on this one, with the reply:

Dear Kevin,

I’ve been traveling back and forth between festivals so I’m sorry I have not been in touch. Your new script is quite disturbing and challenging, a departure from what I’m used to reading from you. I’d like my brother to take a look and get his thoughts.

All my best,

Harvey

Smith, on his blog, talks about how doing a movie on their own and potentially funding it by the fans via MySpace would be interesting, but not likely. The feeling seems to be that there is other funding out there for this movie to happen and they will likely just find another backer.

It seems the hesitation from the studios to invest millions into horror movies like this is a result of the huge-name flop that Grindhouse was. While the folks that saw it loved it, unfortunately it was a combination of over-estimating how much people would like the campy feel and an over 3 hrs movie.

I think their downfall was the 3 hrs movie. in addition to making it for such a niche market (excluded all kids AND adults that may have liked 1 of the movies, but not both back to back).

I’m hoping GH does better on rental to justify the cost. I know it’s in my Netflix queue.
