For those that are confused by this, the “Knot” releases are basically alphas that you can download and try out to see progress until the next release.

A lot of the major eye-candy related items that are planned for Edgy Eft (full list) have been done for the Knot2 release, that includes the updates to X.org 7.1 and Gnome 2.16RC1. Also the eye-candy is enabled by default now that ATI and nVidia have released Linux drivers that support the AIGLX extensions (But still neither does compositing). In addition to the cutting edge X.org and GNOME releases, Knot2 also includes the GAIM 2.0 Beta 3.1 release (finally) which is a nice change since GAIM has been on the 2.0 development stream for quite a while now with no final release in sight. They also include the Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 release which has been surprising stable.

Have a look at the list of things new in the Knot2 release and then download it and try it out.

Here are some screenshots from the Knot2 notes:
GAIM 2.0 Evolution

Update #1: I spoke too soon, this release is still running XServer 7.0, if you read the release notes page it sounded like it was included in this release, but they were merely stating that it is work that will be done for the final Edgy release. I burned and booted this already and there isn’t much to see if you are looking for eye candy, especially if you have been keeping up with the nightly live CD builds, it’s pretty much the same.
