Trying to Work Around T-Mobile G1-Specific Data Plans May Backfire

We recently posted how to use the T-Mobile $20/mo EDGE data plan with your G1 (instead of the more expensive $24.99/mo T-Mobile G1 data plan), but it looks like this may not be all roses and flowers.

As it turns out, there is another workaround similar to this using the T-Mobile “Total Internet” data plan package (which is unlimited data for $20/mo but no Text Messages). Unfortunately, it looks like T-Mobile is tracking G1 usage on their network via the phone’s IMEI and are reviewing all G1’s, on the network, that are not on a G1-specific data plan — and then disconnecting the data plan from them.

We have no idea yet if this applies to the BlackBerry $20/mo EDGE data plan as well, but for folks using that workaround, please be aware that this might happen so if things go south you know ahead of time that you will likely need to call T-Mobile and order the G1-specific data plan; all for a savings of $5/mo… probably not worth it unless you are a real stickler for price or don’t like the $25/mo on principle (e.g. if you don’t live in an 3G area and don’t even have access to T-Mobile’s 3G network).
