Rumors of a giant touch-screen Blackberry for the 9k series have been floating around for a while now, but always shot down. Jens Eckels sent in a link over to ZD Net where Russell Shaw takes a look at a LCD-based touch screen patent filed by RIM that suggests such a device is already through R&D and likely on it’s way in “months”.

Shaw points out that patents are normally published 18 months after getting granted, which means that RIM got his patent accepted in Q406 and had likely already started on a mockup of the device before filing the patent. So you have to imagine that is some serious R&D time on what will become the Blackberry 9000 series.
