Stephen King has confirmed that a movie will be made after his Dark Tower series. For the fans out there, you are likely freaking out right now “Oh god, not a made for TV movie…” but don’t worry, he’s also confirmed that JJ Abrams and co-writer on Lost (Damon Lindelof).
It sounds like King wanted the movie made as he sold them an option on it for $19, letting them run with any ideas they had.
For the fans out there, any takers have any idea on who a good Gunslinger would make? The first person that pops in my head given how the gunslinger is described is honestly Clint Eastwood:
He’s skinny, grizzled, older, spare on words and likes a smoke… exactly as Roland is described.
The only problem, as Slashfilm aptly points out, is that JJ Abrams is currently involved in 6 separate movies right now, along with the much publicized Cloverfield and Star Trek 11. So either Dark Tower is going to be an ‘09/’10 movie or it’s going to get mostly handed off to someone else.

Yeah, clint is definetly the first to pop into just about anybody’s mind when they think of Roland, but he’s just too old. Maybe 10 years ago he could have passed, but not any more. My wife and I are avid fans of the series, and generally Mr. King’s books as a whole, and we both agree that Clint should be given a role in the film if it is ever made. (perhaps Stephen Deschains, or Vannay?)
we also think that British actor, Hugh Laurie would be ideal for the role of Roland. I have many of the other characters cast in my mind, but it is Roland’s tale and it is him that I’m most concerned about being cast properly.

Tyler,
Who would you choose to play the other characters out of curiosity?
Hugh Laurie is not a half bad choice for Roland… tall, gaunt, cool accent. I keep think of the “House” character he plays and I feel like someone more gritty/grizzled is needed, but I can’t come up with anyone in my head.
I know that if they cast The Rock to play his role, I’ll cry though

Sam,
I know what you mean about movie-adaptions… especially if you have a love for the series, seeing a lot of your fantasies “brought to life” or “screwed up” really sucks sometimes when it’s someone else’s vision.
But on a side note, I thought Mist was suppose to be getting good reviews? What was wrong with it? (was sorta looking forward to it)

Riyad,
I’ve thought a lot about who I would cast ever since I started reading the series, and my choices change as the years go by. I originally really liked Tim olyphant and Jada Pinkett for Eddie and Suzannah, respectively, but they may be a little too old for the roles now. currently I like Rosario Dawson for Suze, and maybe Milo Ventimiglia as Eddie (though he could use some acting lessons.)
There is only one person, in my opinion, that could play Walter. Jeremy Irons. He is so freaking evil, but you also kind of like him. It’s weird.
As far as Jake is concerned, that’s really impossible to say. A good child actor now, would probably be too old by the time filming started, and definitely too old by the time the last movie was done filming. the only thing I can think of is to have all the movies scripted beforehand, then film all of Jake’s scenes at once. A lot of planning and a lot of extra editing.
That said though, I used to really like the kid who played young bruce wayne in batman begins. But now the kid in the Mist is my favorite for the role. He’s a little young right now but he’d be perfect in about a year.
Also, in response to Sam’s comment about the Mist, I think he’s way off base. It was true to the story, and extremely well acted/directed (as is the case with the other Frank Darabont adaptations of King’s work.) Regarding the ending, as mad and frustrated as it makes you, there really was no other way to write the ending that wouldn’t have been a total cheap out. If nothing else it evokes an emotional response, and what is the purpose of art if it does not do that? Even negative emotions are emotions.

Tyler,
Great suggestions all around… Rosario Dawson is a good pick for Suze, because the way I interpreted her in the book is attractive/strong/dangerous/unpredictable at times… I could see Dawson pulling that off.
Olyphant is too good looking for Eddie… I need someone more plain looking… I know it seems an odd request…
Also Irons is a good choice for Walter… do you think Walter should talk with an accent? Make him seem more wise or something? I was wondering how I would feel about that… like an English accent or something.
I’m glad to hear the Mist was good, I’m re-looking-forward to it again, thanks for the heads up.
As far as “frustrating endings”, did anyone here read the last book in the dark tower series, and read *clear* into the epilogue because you demanded a firm ending? I totally did… and I was happy with it, that’s another story I would have no freaking idea how to end well and not disappoint half your fan base… so I like the addendum ending that King said he was forced to make by rabbid fans.
