Let’s face it… you jumped the gun and got an HD-DVD player and now you hate your life. If you got that player from Circuit City within the last 3 months however, they are quietly offering a trade-in program to re-apply the full purchase price to that of a Blu-ray player. Not too shabby… thanks Engadget!

Ars Technica is reporting that an M$ mole has given them some inside knowledge. The soon to be obsolete HD-DVD add-on of for the Xbox is dropping from $119.99 to $49.99. You may ask why buy now? Well, if you couple the price drop with the fact that you can get 5 free HD-DVD’s [...]

Ted Regulski, AKA Ted “The Ted Man” Regulski, sent in news that Susan Chronister from Wal-Mart has confirmed that the employee-raping giant will go Blu-ray exclusive by June with no plans to continue stocking HD-DVD media or players. So everyone that bought a $99 HD-DVD… yea… that freaking sucks

Laurence Hartje, staying on-top of the death of HD-DVD, sent in news that Best Buy has taken the official stance of recommending Blu-ray to customers over HD-DVD when asked about which HD format to support. We already covered all the major studios (except Universal) moving over to Blu-ray, and Netflix announcing Blu-ray only support (Blockbuster announced [...]

Laurence Hartje just sent in news that Netflix has decided to go Blu-ray as a response to the trend of other major studios doing the same. While you can still add HD-DVD movies to your queue as of this morning, I don’t know how much longer those disks will stay in circulation. My guess is that [...]

Engadget reports the stats from the most recent Nielsen ratings and it looks like game-over… game-over man… With a 85/15 split up from the last rating showing a 60/40 split or something like that, I think it’s safe to say HD-DVD is done as far as HD movie media is concerned.

Ouch, it just won’t stop. First Warner announces it’s going Blu-ray exclusive, then it is noticed that Paramount can get out if it’s HD-DVD exclusivity contract due to Warner moving and many speculate it will. Now HBO says it will go Blu-ray exclusive and apparently Universal (the last studio left under HD-DVD) has it’s exclusivity contract come [...]

The Financial Times is running a story stating that Paramount has a get-out-of-HD-DVD-free clause in their exclusivity contract… specifically if Warner moved to Blu-ray exclusively (but that would NEVER happen). Here’s the current break down of studio support:

I was hesitating to report on this until more details emerged to make the decision more final. Basically here’s what happened: Warner Bros, one of the last studios on the HD-DVD/Blu-ray fence finally agreed to go exclusive to Blu-ray for the life of the studio after May. Rumors abound that they were paid $500 million to make [...]

Well, we might actually be seeing the begining of the end of the format war (about time!). Warner, the last dual-format supporter has announced that they are moving exclusively to Bluray. Here’s a link to the Reuter’s article. Engadget is reporting that the HD-DVD Promotions group has canceled their CES press conference in response to the Warner [...]

Engadget HD has the scoop on Bay’s response to an angry user that Transformers was going to be a HD-DVD only release by admitting he had the inside track to the high level politics going on with the studios. Bay claims that Microsoft is sitting in the background pulling the strings and purposefully backing HD-DVD, [...]

Just got this in the mail. Amazon is running a $199 deal which includes a Toshiba HD-A3 ($169 by itself, or $99 from some retailers fufilling the $99 A2-backorders earlier) and 10 HD-DVD movies you can choose with the order. The HD-A3 doesn’t do 1080p, but should serve it’s purpose as a value HD-DVD very [...]

Well that lasted long, the impenetrable copy-protection for Blu-ray media, BD+, has been cracked by the SlySoft crew and copying/ripping/backing-up/whatevering your Blu-ray media is now fully supported by the software. What I thought was interesting were some of the notes in the Changelog: Note to Twentieth Century Fox: As you can see, BD+ didn’t offer you any [...]

Laurence Hartje sends in the raid-worthy news that Walmart will be kicking off the holiday season with a $99 HD-DVD player, specifically the Toshiba HD-A2 (CNET Review, Amazon Reviews). Just a quick reminder, this is not the super-high-end 1080p HD-DVD player, this is the mainstream 1080i HD-DVD player. So if you are not an AV-phile, go [...]

It’s official, Samsung has announced a dual-format HD media player: BD-UP5000. This looks to be the first real dual-format player as the LG dual-format player was a Blu-ray player with HD-DVD play-only support tacked on, and didn’t support the true HD-DVD specification; which, like the Blu-ray spec, defines additional technologies like the HDi interactive language, [...]
