For all the 10 trillion people that got T-Mobile G1 phones today, you will have an Android 1.1 update pushed out to you over the data network tomorrow. We have no idea how this will work for folks that are still in non-3G areas, it’s possible the phone will detect no 3G connection and prompt you to go find a WiFi connection to apply the update?
Given that both the BlackBerry and iPhone sync to your desktop first before flashing an OS upgrade, we are very curious to see how the G1 will handle this. Are the updates incremental, like a Windows or Mac OS X upgrade and just on the fly? Or are they a complete re-flash of the OS like on the BlackBerry and iPhone and T-Mobile just hopes that all your data is synced into one Google Service or another?
We don’t know, but we are going to keep you posted.
Thanks Todd Swarthout for sending this in and Gizmodo!
Update #1: As Todd pointed out, it seems that the G1 may have only been available from T-Mobile stores in 3G-covered areas today, but given how popular the phone is, I imagine quite a few folks drove in from out-of-3G-coverage areas to pick these up… so now we’re doubly confused about how the update will be pushed out to non-3G G1 users.

im guessing that update will download to the phone ota regardless of 3g network, and unfortunately would not work over wifi

Max, you are correct. During the time we had the G1 in for review, it actually downloaded an update in the background over EDGE and prompted us to apply it when ready.

Woke up this morning and my phone asked to update it. I’m on an edge network and updated fine. The phone seems to run smoother since the update++ and the missing pacman app suddenlt appeared.

Robert, good deal. BTW get ready for the CupCake firmware update in April. That’ll bring the virtual keyboard finally.
