For the folks looking into the 2006 SXRD lineup from Sony including both the A2000 series and the XBR2 series there are a lot of questions popping up about the differences between the two sets. As usual, the XBR series caries a considerable premium over the A2000 series, and the A2000 series is due to come out a few months before the XBR2 series so a lot of people are jumping on the A2000 series as an equal, but on the specification sheets there are a few minor differences that people have been depating for a while in the AVS forums. One of the biggest differences is the introduction of the DRC 2.5 chips on the XBR2 series while the A2000 series still carries the 2.0 chips from the 2005 series.

Some of the insight into the design of the A2000 series have suggested that they are merely re-packaged 2005 SXRD sets with a few adjustments like th addition of 1080p input while the XBR2 set actually contains new technology. While this matters to some bleeding edge folks, but not so much to others the big concern on everyone’s mind is “is the green blob fixed?”. If the re-packaged argument is true and the A2000 series is just a spruced up 2005 XBR set with the same optic block then no, the green blob is not fixed. I it has a revised optic block then on many people’s mind the A2000 is as good as the XBR2 series picture-quality wise. If it doesn’t have a revised optic block then a lot of folks feel the price premium on the XBR2 series along with the additional technology will atleast make them feel more comforatable about the possibility of the green blob problem being fixed.

For the folks trying to learn more about the XBR2 series and the “DRC 2.5″ revision and what that means, it might be helpful to check out this release from Sony for more information.

Update #1: According to “hschultz” DRC 2.5 will be included in the A2000 series of sets now due to confusion during the press release and manual printing cycle that caused confusion and a lot of upset consumers. So as a “sorry” they will be performing the upgrade before the sets roll out. No idea if it’s legit or not, other posters think it’s bullshit though.

Oh wow, that’s particularly nasty Paul. The lamp should only be around $250 though, so if they are charging you $500 to do it, consider having them give you the TV back and call around for another service center.

  3. paul Says:

they refuse to give the tv back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Paul,
I’m not sure if you are exaggerating or if they honest won’t give you the TV back… assuming that they honestly won’t give you the TV back, that’s called theft, and you need to call the police and make sure you have plenty of proof that you own the TV, called them out to service it and that they won’t give it back.

You could probably do a conference call between Police + Service Center so they could hear the conversation and the problems you are having.

yes… its at this point , and im calling the police/sherrif, they installed it with out telling me what was wrong and how much it would cost… so if this dosent work ill be “disapointed” ….

[...] Well one of the most anticipated sets to finally hit the streets. The 2006 SXRD thread went on for 131 pages of speculation until Sony finally started to trick out their A2000 models; the big question on everyone’s mind being “Is the green blob fixed?” and “Does the XBR2 look $2k better?”. Unfortunately the XBR2 sets aren’t out yet, but the differences that are known are the bulb wattage, lack of dumbo ears on the A2000 series and the number of HDMI connections on the set. There was a rumor that the DRC chip on the XBR2 would be newer, but as reported here, it seems that’s not the case anymore. Fortunately a new thread was started for the A2000 owners that includes some pictures and insight into the set. The consensus so far seems to be “No green blob” and “Freaking beautiful”. A user by the name of netadmin put together a collection of shots from his camera with some HD feeds, you can see them here: [...]
