Sony KDS 50A 2000 50 inch LCOS rear projection tv purchased 12-13-06, picture was great for 17 months until it began with a pronounced green coloration on anything that was supposed to be green and a green tint to most everything else. Within days the Replace Projector Bulb message came on the screen. Since I had Circuit City's extended warranty I called them and they immediately had a serviceman call me the same day and within just a few days he came and replaced the projector bulb.

NO CHANGE in the picture, so the service man reported to CC and their techical dept mulled over whether to replace the tv or try to fix it. Unfortunately they have decided to try to fix it, and will replace the optical block. I'm waiting for it to arrive, two weeks has passed since they told me it would be ordered and they would come and do it.

Like many I'm concerned, is this going to be a redesigned and improved optical block, or just another like the original which may prove defective after 17 months? I'd have preferred to have had the set replaced with a different model.

Marty,

I can't believe they are *still* doing this to users, I'm really sorry to hear that.

The main post for this issue is <a href="http://www.breakitdownblog.com/class-action-lawsuit-against-sony-for-green-haze-or-green-blob-sxrd-problem/" rel="nofollow">here</a>, with over 1100 comments from users with the same issue AND about 200 of them saying the same thing you just did, I have to think that Sony has no soul...

The trick is just to get educated, and call them back and let them know exactly what is going on, they will change their tune quick "Oh THAT problem, yes... that is an issue, we'll schedule a warranty repair for you"

I have a KDS-60A200 and it has the green blob problem. It is getting progressively worse. The set is 18 months old. The bulb went out at 10 months, now this optical block issue. I contacted Sony and they acted like they knew nothing about the problem...

Is there another class action lawsuit starting on this???

Dave,
Please check out the "main" thread for this <a href="http://www.breakitdownblog.com/class-action-lawsuit-against-sony-for-green-haze-or-green-blob-sxrd-problem/" rel="nofollow">over here</a>.

Todd H, just recently was given the total cold shoulder by Circuit City for honoring their warranty for repairing his set, and Sony wouldn't talk to him.

He was completely stone-walled by both and eventually emailed the Chief Executive office at CC to get the situation rectified.

It's comment #928, you can <a href="http://www.breakitdownblog.com/class-action-lawsuit-against-sony-for-green-haze-or-green-blob-sxrd-problem/#comment-8289" rel="nofollow">click here</a> to read it.

Hope that helps.

Phil,
The "official" thread for this issue and the class-action lawsuit associated with it is here:
http://www.breakitdownblog.com/class-action-lawsuit-against-sony-for-green-haze-or-green-blob-sxrd-problem/

also the first thing you want to do is call Sony, they have extended warranties for these TV's into Oct of 2008 I believe just to avoid the class action.

They should give you a service number, and then you should be able to call a local service center and have them come out and do the repair free of charge.

Why TI? TI developed the DLP technology used by Mitsubishi and Samsung, but Sony, JVC and Syntax-Brillian use LCoS-based sets which has nothing to do with TI (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-ILA" rel="nofollow">ref</a>).

Do you have a link handy by chance? Maybe TI was trying to make a case *against* LCoS and for DLP?

Texas Instruments commisioned a consumer products testing agency in New York state to burn in the SXRDs and found every set developed the problem after about 2000 hours.

In June 06, I bought a 50" Sony SXRD Projection TV from Circuit City. In July 07, a green haze appeared on the screen, and has now settled in as a permanent feature of the TV I purchased.

I talked to a technician at Circuit City about the problem with my set. He did say that more and more people have been complaining about the problem with the Sony's. I asked the technician why would Circuit City try to sell me a product that they knew had these problems, or why didn't they tell me about the problem before the sale. He explained that it was a "problem" that Sony had been trying to keep under wraps, and that Circuit City may not have known about this defect with the Sony's.

My set is out of it's warranty by two and half months now, and I'm stuck with a 50" LCD TV that doesn't have a good picture because of the green haze!

What can I do? $2600.00 down the drain! Seems to me that there should be a class action suit against Sony if they aren't willing to correct the problem or return the money for it's defective TV's.

I guess it's time to contact the PA Attorney General's office?

I have an August build 60 inch A-2000. It too has the green hazed center surrounded by puplish haze top and bottom. Slowly gets better the longer it is on but still quite evident on black and white even after an hour or more. Also my blacks have turned bluish with purple at the top and bottom. These also get less noticeable the longer the set is on but never go away. I am awaiting a new optical block under warranty.

Purchased Thanksgiving at CompUSA. I first noticed the green fog at startup. The lamp color takes a long time to stabilize and during warmup you see lots of green hue. Unfortunately the green fog is still there even after hours of watching so it's not a warmup issue it's real. What now Sony?

Hello,

Purchased my SXRD 50" in November 06. So far I'm not detecting any green haze or blob on startup or thereafter. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Al Z, you should have a look at the official thread here:

Probably 50 more people that are having the same exact problem, and information about the lawyer to get in contact with about the class action lawsuit against Sony.

Post: Jan 11, 2007 XBR1 Set bought Feb 06. First optics block put in May 06. Lasted until Dec 06. Now waiting for in second optics block for the same green blob! While waiting for optics block lamp burned out. No TV period!
This plus what I read on web puts Sony in a terrible light.
