Soldier of Fortune Payback

GameSpot has coverage on the new Soldier of Fortune: Pay Back, and word on the street is that it’s just as gory if not gorier than Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix which was probably on of the goriest war games ever made (e.g. shoot someone in the eye, see half their head blow off).

A quote from GameSpot more or less explains the defactor Australian ban before the game even got out of the gates:

You’ve got your real-world weaponry, your story of international turmoil and intrigue, and, of course, an ultradetailed dismemberment model that lets you blow the arms, legs, and heads off of your scores of opponents with deadly aplomb. In fact, the new engine can model the break points on enemies’ bodies with greater detail than Raven’s old GHOUL system used in Double Helix. A leg, for instance, is now broken up into a foot, ankle, lower leg, and two sections of thigh. Headshots don’t just kill an enemy, they cause the head to burst in a fount of blood and cranial matter.

Some of you might think this hypocritical to report about given our recent 2-part article (1, 2) on Gaming Violence, but this is the difference… while this game might offer up different gore levels for different kinds of kills (similar to Gears of War), it doesn’t reward the player any differently for how they kill or mangle an enemy.

Another interesting quote from the GameSpot article, it looks like the developers actually viewed dismemberment videos during the research phase of the game to try and get it right, but found themselves so disturbed by real gore that they decided to ratchet back the realism and rachet up the comical blood of dismemberment in the game to make it clearly a more light-hearted event as opposed to ground down in gritty detail and realism.

How gory will this game be? Take a look:
