Do you have an iPhone but wish you could make/receive VoIP calls at certain times? Good, because sipgate is bringing you just that. This is especially important for making international calls as they can sometimes be as high as $3/min and eat away at your minutes with service charges from your provider. sipgate, like Skype, keeps the cost of making international calls down to dirt, about $0.01/min.

The full sipgate announcement:
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - June 4, 2008 - sipgate Inc. (www.sipgate.com) today
announces the immediate availability of a free application for the
iPhone, which, for the first time allows consumers to natively use any
VoIP service which uses the industry standard SIP. Consumers can now
use their iPhones to make and receive VoIP calls from their devices over
a Wi-Fi Internet connection using a wide variety of VoIP providers. The
VoIP-enabling software is available from sipgate’s website
www.sipgate.com.With the sipgate service, users can dial any number without using
minutes from a wireless plan. This is particularly useful when calling
to or from other countries, as call costs can be as high as $3 per
minute. However, when using a VoIP service, costs can be kept as low as
$0.01 per minute. sipgate is giving new users 111 free minutes for
domestic calls for users to test out VoIP usage on the device*.Another benefit of sipgate is that consumers can use any domestic or
international number provided by their VoIP service on their iPhone.
This means that they can make and receive calls from different domestic
and international numbers, all on a single device.Thilo Salmon, CEO of sipgate commented: “We love VoIP and we love the
iPhone so we are giving people like us who always wanted VoIP on the
iPhone the ability to use any SIP-based VoIP service they want. We are
thrilled that Apple is opening up the iPhone and we look forward to
taking part in future application development.”Salmon continued: “As a company we strive to make useful services
accessible to everyone. There will be more innovation for businesses
and consumers coming from sipgate this year, so keep your eyes open for
more news.”Graphics and screenshots of the service are available at

I’ve installed this application on the iPhone and every time I try to call somebody it says its ringing but I can’t hear anything. When the other person picks up it says “in call” and I still can’t hear anything…really strange. Anyone else getting this problem?

Alex I haven’t tried it yet, but can the other person hear you, you just can’t hear them, or you can’t get ANYTHING working?
Also are you trying this over EDGE, or are you on Wifi when you try it? Mght be worth trying both.

Hi Riyad,
I can’t hear them… and they can’t hear me either.
Everything else seems to work fine..the the screen indicates that the phone is dialing, and then it shows that the conversation is connected. Everything works except audio (kind of important when you think about it eh?)
I am only using WIFI because i’m in Canada. If the data rates were affordable up here I would try using EDGE, but right now thats just not possible..

Alex

Hmmmm very strange Alex, what happens if you dial your cell phone from Skype on your computer, anything?
June 7th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Hey Riyad,
Thanks for the reply. I have no problems communicating with my cell using Skype. I actually have Fring installed on my Iphone and it works fantastic (except for a slight time delay). Bear in mind I am only running firmware 1.1.1, so perhaps when I upgrade to 1.1.4 it might work for me then…i’ll keep you posted in the next few days.
Regards,
Alex

I am having the same problems as Alex - I can make a call, but I get no sound. However, the person I called can hear me.
After closing the application, I also have to restart my iPhone in order to get back the “normal” sound effects of the phone.
BTW, I’m running firmware 1.1.4

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the reply. Yeah I still have had no success with this application. I still have no sound either way. I am in the middle of upgrading to 1.1.4 so i’ll let you know what happens. I also have to restart my iphone to get the “normal” Iphone sound effects back.
Regards,
Alex
