Today Shelby SuperCars (SCC) released more details on their electric supercar, the Ultimate Aero EV. SCC has essentially replaced the powertrain on their Ultimate Aero which they claim is the “World’s Fastest Production Car” with an all-electric scalable powertrain (AESP). Before proceeding I just want to highlight the key details that this AESP provides for the car because it just seems amazing to me!

The twin AESP motor (373kW) will provide 1,000 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque (with 100% torque at 0 rpm). How fast do all those electric horses allow this car to go? Try a very mind numbing 0-60 speed of 2.5 seconds with a top speed of 208 mph. The thought of Dark Helmet engaging ludicrous speed on Spaceball-1 comes to mind!

Below is a video of the non-EV version of the Aero:

Okay, so we know this thing is supposedly going to be crazy fast. SCC also does a respectable job on the range of the car, claiming 150-200 miles per charge. Perhaps more impressive is their “Charge on the Run ™” allowing a full charge in 10 minutes on 220V. Wow. That is quite fast. Much faster than the 3.5 hour charge time of the Tesla Roadster, perhaps the only other pure electric sports car in production.

For those gear heads, the Ultimate Aero EV is liquid cooled and the engine is designed to operate at peak power for prolonged periods. Electronically controlled shift times of .24 seconds will allow the car to rapidly shift between the 3 speed automatic transmission.

This is all of course great news to have a truly green supercar, but what about the folks like you and me that can’t afford such luxury? Are we simply left out of the green revolution and forced to get by on the combustible engine? Luckily, the folks at SCC’s Green Division are also working to fit AESP motors with varying levels of hp (200 – 500 hp) to suit a variety of car classes (economy, midsized, etc…) as well as providing high hp motors for more heavy duty applications such as buses, trucks, etc.

Full-scale production and delivery of the Ultimate Aero EV is expected to start early 2009 with delivery as early as 4th quarter 2009. We’ll see how that goes, but at least that is their plan.
