Seagate Plays the Douchebag Card (Stymies SSD)

Well it happened… a few months ago it was rumored that Seagate held some IP that was essentially infringed upon by all existing solid state drive (SSD) designs. There were rumors that Seagate would pull that card just as the market was exploding in order to either kill off competition in the space or seriously increase revenue with licensing income.

No more speculation, they finally did it to STEC. If Seagate wins it would boil down to essentially a “tax on SSDs” which are already too expensive and in increasingly high demand. There is also the potential that there would be a tax on all flash-based memory devices as a result too… OUCH.

Well that sucks… but if I were Seagate and suddenly saw the opportunity to double income over the next 10 years just by hiring a lot of fancy lawyers… I can’t say I wouldn’t do it too.
