News is trickling out that while Guitar Hero: World Tour will pioneer the custom-music-creation tooling for “band gaming”, Rock Band 2 won’t have the feature out of the gate but may add something “radically different” down the road to the game.

So as we get closer to these September and October release dates for the two biggest video game music franchises, the details are starting to emerge to help us try and make an educated decision on which one to go with.

Because of the backward-compatibility with DLC, the order of deciding between the two franchises will look something like this for most people:

  1. Do I have a significant number of DLC from a previous release? If YES, stick with this franchise.
  2. Do I have a strong preference for the artist or song lineup for Guitar Hero: World Tour or Rock Band 2? If YES, buy the preferred franchise.
  3. Am I the type to put in time creating custom songs OR downloading and playing custom songs from other people? If YES, buy Guitar Hero: World Tour.
    1. … or possibly Rock Band 2 assuming at a later date they announce the details of their own creation feature.
  4. Have I played Guitar Hero or Rock Band enough in the past to prefer the feel or style of one game over the other? If YES, buy the associated franchise.

Thanks CNN!

    1. No, fuck that.
    2. I haven’t actually seen the setlist for GH4. I’ve seen a couple leaks of a few songs, which was pretty bad-a. But nothing full-on, yet. I DO like the Rock Band 2 set list, but I’m pretty sure that they’ll be similar so it hasn’t sold me yet.
    3. I like the custom creation feature, but I probably won’t put much time into it. Why? Cause I’m a slothful little jackass. That’s why.
    4. Guitar Hero all the way. But everyone already knew that. So whatever.

Again, if they are compatible with eachother, I’m totally down with both. But fuck buying like, $400 worth of video games and their equipment. FUCK THAT.

    The end.
