Rock Band 2 Guitar and Screenshots How Does it Compare to Guitar Hero: World Tour?

Staying on-top of the Rock Band 2 vs Guitar Hero: World Tour craze is hard business. First we find out that Guitar Hero: World Tour will have all sorts of sexy Guitar enhancements, wireless drums and song-creation features!

Then we get a peek at the Guitar Hero: World Tour artist and song list… looking hot, but then another bit of news comes over the wall in the form of Rock Band 2’s faux-wood guitar that looks pretty nice, but doesn’t have the touch-sensitive pad like the Guitar Hero: World Tour guitar.

Then we get a peak at the Rock Band 2 artist and song list, although many readers notice duplications between the Rock Band 2 list and the Rock Band DLC content already available, hmmm, maybe not too exciting?

And as we are saying to ourselves “Who cares, Guitar Hero: World Tour wins because of it’s wireless drums”, we get a lap-bomb that Rock Band 2 will have wireless drums too.

Our take is that the real difference between the two franchises will come down to how important the following items are:

  1. Existing DLC that may keep you tied to an existing franchise.
  2. Depending on how the music-creation tool works in Guitar Hero: World Tour, that could mean infinitely more songs for you to play with that set.
  3. Are the differences between the instruments compelling enough to make a decision? For example, the touch-sensitive Guitar Hero guitar or the cymbals on the drum set?
  4. Do you prefer the feel of either game better than the other?

There are some serious question marks around the music-creation tool in our minds at this point. While it could be the stand-out feature that makes Guitar Hero: World Tour the hands-down winner, there are royalty problems that make it unlikely you’ll be able to share the music you create based on existing popular songs.

There is also the issue that most people only like these games because it lets them play music they recognize and feel like a rock star.

I am not that interested in playing some guy’s personal rock song if I can jam out to the classics while the crowd screams and I think back to my childhood when I dressed in head bands and giant legwarmers.

Thanks VE3D!

The existing Rock Band 1 DLC is going to work in Rock Band 2. That’s why the DLC is showing up on the screenshot list. The songs that are currently out as DLC are not going to be on the RB2 disc.

Fedora, thanks for the clarification. My (incorrect) assumption is that they were going to ship with the DLC on-disk or something or maybe just a handful of the most popular ones.

Actually if it came down to a numbers game (had to beat Guitar Hero’s song list count) I wonder if they would do that… maybe get both of them to ship with like 200 songs just trying to out-do one another? That would be awesome.

  3. Me Says:

Jesus, just get a real guitar and learn to play. It’s not that hard.

  4. Anonymous Says:

Yeah, I’m sick of all this. And a real gun. And really steal some cars! And a real pikachu!

  5. Riyad Kalla Says:

Hahah @ Anonymous, it’s so true… whenever a game gets too close to reality (like some of these Sim games) the response from people is “Get a real life and do it for real!” or “Go outdoors l00z3r!”, but the idea that there is something slightly easier and more fun to do than the *actual* thing is just unheard of.

I wonder if this happens in the Gran Turismo threads? “Go buy a fucking McLaren and drive it for real lazy!”

    maybe not…

Oh and “Me”, the Guitar is *impossible* to learn for some of us that suck royally at instruments… so yea Guitar Hero and Rock Band are godsends :)

  6. The Response Says:

Get a real guitar….as Riyad said, most people suck at real instruments. Plus on the same note as the gran turismo thought, go buy a real guitar and a real bass and a real drum kit and a real microphone and real speakers and amps and all the written music for each instrument for each song you want to play blah blah blah….maybe paying a couple hundred bucks for some plastic crap to play through a few concerts with your buddies is a little more realistic for the majority of people.

If everyone could play real music, wouldnt everyone be doing it?
Anytime there is something popular the anti-popular crowds have to bash it.

  7. Nichi Says:

I think everyone’s covered my thoughts about the “get a real guitar” thing. Yeah, I’ll go out and spend more than the ENTIRE FUCKING GAME for a guitar, and suck royally at it. I will spend hours upon hours torturing myself with lessons and sucking royally at the instrument. Then I’ll play the same songs as what would be on these video games, and everyone will call me mediocre. I will have wasted months of years of my life, whereas I could’ve beaten the motherfucking game and moved on to bigger and better things.
OR… and here’s the awesome thing… you could realize that Guitar Hero and Rock Band are GAMES. I really really like Pokemon stadium, but I’m not wrangling small woodland critters and pitting them against eachother in battle, am I? Fuck no. Maybe people play games because they are righteous and kickass and very fun, not because they want to simulate something they would rather to in real life.
    That’s just my opinion though.

Just had a “snorted-water-out-the-nose” moment when I got to the “but I’m not wrangling small woodland critters and pitting them against eachother in battle, am I?” part… so awesome.

Oh man, just laughed again, the Google Adsense ad right above this is “Click hear to Learn and Master the Guitar!”

no thanks Google, I think I’ll let the pros do the music, and I’ll just act like I know it while my virtual fans swoon over me :D

  9. Nichi Says:

    Riyad,
Not trying to shamelessly plug my own blog or anything, but if you enjoy my responses, you should check out the blog I just started. It’s not much, as I juuuuuust started it, but it’s a start!

Anyone who says “GET A REAL GUITAR”, Fuck you.

Its called a videogame, No shit its fake but its fun

I like playing songs over and over and getting better, but I dont honestly want to do real guitar

if I try to play a song, it will sound nothing like the original.

Related to the blog, I think Rock Band 2 is the winner
Cross-game DLC was a big win, and a lot of great artists

GH4 is really just pushing it, the drums have really big pieces of plastic seperating the pads, the guitar is “OK” and it isnt really realistic at all

    RB2 for the win

  11. Editor Says:

Ok so I actually picked up a guitar last weekend and tried to let someone show me how to play it… jesus CHRIST I’m not good at instruments.

He showed me the C-chord, then A… and then I forgot C… so he showed me that again, but I had already forgotten A, so he showed me that again, and then one of my fingers slipped and he tried to show me D but I forgot C and A…

That was the exactly moment I decided I would never have a real rock band :(

  12. femalegamer Says:

Both Rockband 2 and Guitar Hero:World Tour are making their big announcements as to the new features, songs and play leading up to their release dates. Lot’s of money, lot’s of hype in
