Ok so a few people had this problem and so did I. Essentially you hook the PS3 up to your TV over HDMI, and you get a signal, but it’s a black screen. I had been waiting about a week to get my HDMI cable in the mail from MonoPrice and when it finally got here and I hooked it up, and switched on the PS3 I was pissed.
After some reading I saw the suggestion that worked for me:
- Hook the old connection up, in my case that was composite, in addition to the HDMI connection between the TV and PS3
- Turn on the PS3, let it boot up
- Go to the System Settings > Display settings, and change the display to HDMI
- Switch your TV to the HDMI input, accept the display changes.
- Unhook the old (composite) connection.
After much worrying, the steps above fixed my problem and I was off the races. My first impression of the interface running at 1080p on my Mitsubishi WD-65831 was “NICE!”… I’ll post my BluRay (Crank) impressions soon.

James,
Turn off the PS3, then when you go to turn it back on, hold *down* the power button for I think 10 secs… you will hear it beep I believe, then let go… it will power up with the reset 480p resolution.
From that screen you should be able to choose to reconfigure the display settings.
Also make sure you are using either your HDMI or SVideo connection, not both.
Also, if you have only ever tried 1 type of connection (like HDMI only) try the other kind (s-video) to see if you can get *any* video out.

Thanks so much! What a strangely simple solution.. it’s all about the sequence… don’t hit “x” to accept the HDMI output setting until AFTER you have switched back from the ‘old school’ video to HDMI. So you are hitting enter ‘blind’, and something about the video mode changing while it’s connected to the HDMI mode will ‘kick’ the TV into accepting HDMI again. Phew! Thanks!

Hello I had exactly the same problem. I have a LG plasma TV and i called LG, they sent somebody who repaired, it was the mother card of the TV that was damaged. It happens pretty often according to what the tv guy told me.
No it works again perfectly I’m soooooooo happy !

That’s excellent news, I’m glad to hear that LG took care of you and got that fixed so promptly.
