Ted Regulski sends in the poop on the new 2.10 firmware release for the PS3. If you power it on you should be prompted to do a System Update when you try and sign on or go to System Update off of the XMB.
- Voice Changer
- The Voice Changer feature has been added to voice / video chat. Visit the Voice Changer guide in Help & Support under PS3 at eu.playstation.com for more details. Using this feature, you can change the tone of a voice that is input from an audio device such as a microphone. High and low-pitched tones can each be adjusted to five preset levels. You can vary the tone when using voice / video chat under Friends.
- Music
- You can now select [Type 3] as an option under Settings > [Music Settings] > [Bitmapping]. This bitmapping process was developed specifically for the PS3TM system to enhance audio playback.
- Video
- DivX and VC-1 (WMV) have been added to the types of files that can be played. (1)
- Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 is now supported. (2)
- [BD Data Utility] has been added. (3)
- To play VC-1 (WMV) format files, you must go to Settings > [System Settings] and set [Enable WMA Playback]. Copyright-protected files or files that were encoded by using DivX 3.11 cannot be played. - Files that are 2GB or more cannot be played.
- You may now be able to use several additional features such as playback of two videos at the same time with Profile 1.1-compatible Blu-ray Discs. The available features vary depending on the disc.
- The management data that is used by the Blu-ray Disc is saved.
Update #1: Kotaku reports that Xvid support is in this update, but the media has to be played off of the PS3’s hard drive in order for it to work. Let’s hope this requirement is lifted soon and we can get back to streaming our media from home servers.

great, sony doesn’t stay behind.
i have seen many peeps argue that it didn’t play divx… pssssss.
if they wanted it could be a full blown pc “out of the box”, but umm.. they r going slowly and don’t want to support so many features (yet)
in comparison to the ps2, this does so much more. They are just testing the waters so one day the “ps4″ will have unlimited features. Personal computers will be known by our kids as “playstations” o.o

Manny this is exactly right and one of the reasons I enjoy my PS3 so much.
I’ve been a closet PS3-lover because of the additional “computer-like” features it offers, but I’ve always felt the hardware is better. Now we are finally starting to see games that push the PS3 and the XBox isn’t keeping up (Burnout Paradise is the first dual-release title that makes it pretty obvious, read here 2nd post)
Some folks mentioned that Microsoft is planning a hardware refresh to the 360 come next holiday season with a 45nm CPU and faster as well… what I don’t understand is how does that help the 7 million people that already bought an old XBox 360? I don’t think they’ll do it, because it will create a rift in the developer community as well as owners.
Just my 2cents… but who knows, they’ve done stupider things before

oh i didn’t knew burnout paradise already makes the 360 lag..
i read somewhere that by 2009 the 360 would start becoming “old”.
5 years from now games will take full advantage of the ps3 and sony estimates that it will have a lifespan of up to 10 years (you may see new releases 8 or 9 years from now)
most phones today already cost more than ps3. It’s a bargain.
