Ok guys, a LOT more feedback pouring in on the Mitsubishi WD-57/65831 and I have to say you might as well just forget that post from a few days back where people were having problems, this thread has turned into nothing but praise for the set. Everything from picture quality, to flexibility of card-read, to input-management to color reproduction… you name it, this set has it.
Anyway, ‘Smeeg‘ had put together his “Optimal Settings” for this TV to create the ultimate picture. I wouldn’t normally post these unless they are from calibrators, but Smeeg knows his stuff and a few pages later a couple people tried out Smeeg’s settings and were blown away by the difference. So here they are for everyone (And reference for me when I get mind

Also for a touch of eye-candy, ‘chuckhas‘ posted a picture of his new WD-57831 and I think this gives a very good indication of how bright this TV is without setting it in Brilliant even because of that 180watt bulb:

Thanks for all of the helpful information for the settings. We would never have figured them out on our own. We actually almost took the television back until we found this information, it made a huge difference. Thanks again.

Thank you for posting Jonathan, I’m glad they helped! Happy Holidays.

This is great information. Do you happen to know if it would be the same for the 57/732?
January 2nd, 2007 at 10:03 pm
Dan I’m not sure about the 731, but the 732 *should* work the same as it has a lot of the features of the 831.

Great results, thanks! Did you do any tweaking of these settings for the Brilliant and Bright picture modes?

My Tv continues to turn itself off (likely overheating). It is only 4 months old and an error message pops up saying TV will shut down in a few seconds. Please check the air flow. Nobody seems to be able to fix the problem and I have an industrial fan blowing on it to watch TV.
March 27th, 2007 at 9:31 am
Todd,
If the TV is 4 months old, call Mitsubishi warranty services and get someone out there right away to look into it. If after 1 or 2 visits they cannot fix it, return the set or get a replacement.
If the place you bought it from won’t take it back, then just keep having Mitsu come out and repair it within the year warranty period until they either fix it, or they offer to replace the set for you. Just don’t let it go out of warranty then try and get the issue fixed, then you get caught between a rock and a hard place.

I have the same problem as Todd. I have a six month old 65″ 57831 that shuts itself down complaining about air flow. I’ve had a technician from BestBuy who thought it was a software/firmware update for the TV, not an airflow problem. He’s trying to get an update from MIts, but it’s been a couple of weeks. Btw, I doubt very much that airflow has anything to do with it. if anybody hears of a solution, however, I’d love to hear it. I have a DSP TV with a great picture that I can barely use.

John,
If the TV is under the 1 year warranty I would deal with Mits, not BestBuy and see if you have better luck.

Ok the “Air Flow” issue just started happening to me, blogging about it here:

Just experienced the air flow problem. Luckily my TV is still under warranty (barely). Anyway, the repair shop says it’s nothing I can do. It’s the TV talking to itself. They’re coming to get it tomorrow. I was told Mitsubishi is aware of the problem and has sent their repairman what he needs to know to fix it. We’ll see.

Keep us posted Sandy, hopefully he’s able to do an in-home repair.
August 24th, 2007 at 7:18 am
Sandy, in case they haven’t taken your set away yet, take a look at the recent comments at Riyad’s blog. The link is just above your comment above. Instructions for the fix from Mits do not require taking the set to a shop but that assumes your problem is the same as what so many of us are seeing. Best of luck. Let us know how it goes.

In regards to the TV will shut down in a few seconds. Please check the air flow. Problem, It is the connection on the thermal censor, I have fixed this problem in the past, Depending on where you live, my company is an autherised service center, our website is sharpervideo.com

Fred,
Thanks for posting. I am sure more people will run across this problem and will find your help very valuable.

Our TV started shutting down, I called American TV. The Tech called me to set the appointment. I asked him about the problem, he was very familiar with it. Said there was a problem with the routing of the wiring near the bulb. Causing the temp signal wire to overheat. He is coming over this afternoon to install the fix.
How do you get to perfect tint?
August 30th, 2007 at 9:59 am
Denis,
Hope the fix goes smoothly and he’s doing it in-house.
If you want details on how the fix is done, the official Air-Flow-Problem post/thread is here:

hi all,
I just got a Mitsubishi 65′ model WD-65733 from craigslist…
the picture on the TV is great and i did a lot of research to mak esur ei really wanted this TV… the lamp in my TV seems to be in good shape ( 2,160 hrs) so the brightness is still in great shape.
once I installed into my house and hooked all cables and stuff, 2 issues really bother me:
1. i don’t see to get the settings right for optimal picture… I was wondering if any enthusiast would share the optimal setting he did on his WD 65733 TV?
2. I can notice a slide bending in the geometry of my screen… i go that far to look into the service menu at Manual Keygen Geometry setting and i got some instructions on how I may be able to adjust it.. the top lines are bent outwards and out of the screen… I don’t seem to be able to bring them to the desired position… any suggestions?
thank you and I would greatly appreciate any suggestions…
BTW, should I even consider the settings presented above (for the 65′ 57831 model above)…while that may be an interesting exercise, I doubt it will produce good results for my TV… I don;t even have some of the controls on mine.
my email is mariusmarcu@global.t-bird.edu in case anybody is interested.

We also have a Mitsubishi WD-65831 Diamond Series. We had it for 2 months before we began experiencing the same air flow problems. We had to have a lamp replaced at 3 months and now 15 months into it still continue to experience constant shut off while watching tv, the red light comes on and we have to wait a few minutes and try again. It has been so frustrating, as we spent quite a bit of money on what Mitsubishi touted as their biggest and best big screen. I understand from reading these blogs that there may be an extended warranty so I am going to try to call Mits again (my husband and I had done so many previous times and I will say they were no help, just kept telling us they will submit the problem/will escalate, etc., but nothing was ever done about it and we never received calls back from our multiple attempts to get the problem resolved). Needless to say, we will not be purchasing any more Mitsubishi products in the future. Thanks to all of you who blog about your experiences, very helpful.

can i post a pic of my new mits wd 65735 here???
March 4th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
what would be the perfect picture settings for my dlp?
or is it just a matter of personal taste?
March 4th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
keith,
If you email it to me (contact@breakitdownblog.com) I’ll post it for you. Also, I find that settings are totally subjective — my buddy that is an officially certified calibrator prefers what I would consider way to dark and “skin tone” images… but *officially* speaking, his calibrations are more “accurate” — I just don’t like the way they look.

oh ok cool

Well, here is a new one on the Mits 57831, at least I have not seen it before. I now have a nail-head size white spot of light fixed in the middle of the lower right quadrant of the screen. It just appeared yesterday. Very bright white and the size of a finishing-nail head, it’s too distracting to live with. No other apparant problems or artifacts on the screen. Ryad and friends, does anyone know what I’m likely seeing? This little spec of light looks very expensive to me!
Thanks. MikeF

Riyad, apologies for the typo in your name. MikeF

Hah, Mike I liked your comment “This little spec of light looks very expensive to me!” — no doubt it will be, sounds like something is wrong with the panel itself.
To verify this try switching inputs on the TV itself and make sure that the white light stays in exactly the same spot… if it does, then it sounds like the panel has a corruption and will need service, in which case my suggests is that unless it’s under warranty, consider a new TV — I’ve never seen a panel repair less than $1500… can’t hurt to have someone come out and take a look though… unless they want a huge service fee
June 18th, 2009 at 7:49 am
Riyad — $109 + tax for service call and diagnosis on Monday.
The set is about 27 months old. I know Mits extended the warranties on the xx831 sets due to the airflow problems but I don’t remember how long the extension was and what it covered. I don’t expect any warranty relief. I’ll get back with what I learn on Monday. Mike

Anyone know the current sofware version for the WD-57831?
I am running v33+008.01

Will these settings work with the wd-73735? Please let me know and is there some place I can
find other perfect color settings at?
