Slashdot reports that a North Carolina man was fined $1000 “Fuel Tax” by city officials when it was discovered he was burning Vegetable Oil in his car, instead of standard gasoline. Reggie Little, assistant director of the motor fuel taxes division said:
We’re not here to hurt the small guy, we’re just trying to make sure that the playing field is level.
I don’t think Reggie needed to justify the charge, we all sympathize with OPEC making $44 yillion dollars, our government declaring a “war on foreign oil” and yet the actions of everything else this country does, flying in the face of exactly that.

The city (suspiciously unnamed) certainly was correct in making sure this tax cheat paid his fair share of
fuel taxes, which are used to maintain the highways, but
they should have simply billed him for the amount of unpaid taxes rather than levying a rather arbitary fine.
The actions had nothing to do with “foreign oil.”
