Woot! Looks like the Mitsubishi WD-65831 is the highest rated HDTV on CNET Reviews. That includes comparisons to other sets like LCDs, Plasmas and LCoS sets.
I do have to say after owning this TV for a few months now, it’s fantastic. I’m not the biggest fan of the Dark Detailer, but the edge enhancement is fantastic (different than sharpness). And the color is wonderful. I think I’ve tweaked a total of 2 settings and the picture looks great to me, no professional calibration or any of that jazz.
Update #1: For the curious out there wanting to know the calibration settings that CNET used while looking at the set, our man Chris Hunkele sent us the poop:

Andy,
If you had a chance to share I’m sure folks would appreciate it. Probably not the service menu tweaks, but color, brightness, and enhancement settings might be interesting.
Also I’m assuming you had UMR do your 831 or are you referring to a different set?

Andy, Thanks in advance for the update on the settings. Three of us are in the process of buying 831’s and your settings would be a great help. Hopefully buying 3 831’s will reduce the cost per unit. I look forward to your update

Holy crap… how much of a discount did they cut you? That’s awesome!
I bet if you all live near eachother you can pitch in and have UMR come out and do all your sets at once.

Everyone: What’s UMR?
I just bought an 831 and want the scoop on Andy’s settings…what’s he taking so long 4?

S.B.,
UMR is a poster on AVS Forum who is a professional calibrator that a lot of folks on AVS know (and love).

I bought an 831 as well and found the settings below on the AVS forum. The first section is all I’ve used as I couldn’t get some of the advanced settings to take (my line ****** below). The first few of those settings would allow me to make changes but the rest wouldn’t. Anyway, the changes I made worked very nicely but they’re really for a dark room setting. I’d love to see what Andy has to say about these. Hopefully you find these of value. The colors on my TV are excellent now, as are the blacks. There is very little if any noise on any source. Peace.
