EngadgetHD has the scoop on the new sets Mitsubishi is releases in their 1080p DLP series. Previously the series were:

  • 731
  • 732
  • 831

The new series are:

  • 733 - 6-Color Light Engine, x.v.Color, PerfectColor, three rear HDMI 1.3 ports, and a front component input.
  • 734 - [733 Specs Plus...] Dark Detailer, PerfecTint, DeepField Imager, SharpEdge, NetCommand, and a front HDMI port.
  • 833 - [734 Specs Plus...] Smooth120Hz, TV Guide On Screen 9.0, Game FX, 1394, and even RS232C.

The hot items I see in the new sets are x.v.Color, 3x HDMI 1.3 Ports, Smooth120Hz, Game FX. Actually a fairly nice refresh to see on these sets. Not enough for me to throw out my current set, but if it keeps giving me trouble, you better believe I’ll look at replacing it.

Can’t you connect your xbox360 through the DVI port and get 1080p that way? using a VGA cord and vga to dvi adapter

  2. Riyad Kalla Says:

    Joe,
I actually did by the VGA cable for the XBox and tried it with a junky little DVI-VGA converter I got with my BFG video card a while ago and couldn’t get a signal… someone I spoke to about it said “oh, you can’t do that”… not sure why.

Anyway your post prompted me to get a more official converted:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041903&p_id=2396&seq=1&format=2

hopefully that will do the trick. We’ll see in about 2 days when I get it, I’ll try it again.

  3. Joe Says:

Yea? I think the issue is whether or not the DVI input will accept the 1920×1200 (1080p) resolution via an analog signal which is I guess what it is getting via VGA -> DVI conversion. According to the manual it only accepts digital DVI for that resolution, but I’ve read reports that it can anyway, so I was wondering if you got it to work.

  4. Riyad Kalla Says:

    Joe,
It should get here soon (the adapter) and I’ll keep you posted

    sounds good

  6. Riyad Kalla Says:

    Joe,
I got the adapter yesterday, I busted out the VGA cables from XBox and plugged everything in and got no signal on the DVI port.

I do have to point out one caveat here… I bought these cable unboxed from eBay and I have a *sneaking* sensation, even though they feel good, and all the markings match up, that they might be a counterfit set and not the real ($40) set of VGA cables.

Atleast that’s what I hope, cause otherwise I have no other way to try and get 1080p from my XBox (really only concerned with HD-DVD, because there is no XBox game that renders in 1080p, it’s just upscaled).

I might consider buying the real cables from Walmart, Target, etc. and trying them and if they work keeping them and trashing the old ones, or just returning them if they don’t work.

  7. Joe Says:

are you sure there no games rendered in 1080p?? On the back of the new games it lists 1080p as one of the output options.

  8. Joe Says:

also.. did you try 1080i or 720p through the DVI input? if that works and 1080p does it confirms my fear that it wont accept 1080p through VGA converted to DVI. In which case, i may consider trading in my newly purcahsed 732 model for a Samsung, which accepts 1080p over component.

  9. Riyad Kalla Says:

    Joe,
I typed up this long reply, but ultimately it boiled down to the fact that I’m just not sure.

For really complex games like Gears, Halo, Rainbow Six, etc. there is no way the XBox is rendering those at 1080p and outputting them, it doesn’t have the horse power to do it. While your TV might *show* 1080p, all the XBox is doing is upscaling the 720p image.

But for games like Uno and the like, I’m sure they can output 1080p.

It’s not like this doesn’t go for the PS3 either, Killzone 2 and games like that are going to be 720p as well.

There is a limit to how much these GPUs can output, and there is quite a big difference (processor requirement-wise, framebuffer requirements, processing power) between a true 720p image and a 1080p image.

When the XBox first announced “1080p” support, there was a ton of analysis done online about how it was impossible due to technical limitations… I’m not positive about that though. And you also have to consider just cause your TV says it’s getting a 1080p signal, it doesn’t mean that is what the game is rendering at internally… it could just be upscaling 720p for you. That’s the rub, you just don’t know.

Sorry couldn’t be more detailed, at the end of the day, all we really care about is if it looks good, right? ;)

  10. Riyad Kalla Says:

    Joe,
Which sized 732 did you get? I would *encourage* you to switch our your 732 for Sammy’s 61″ LED-based sets that they just released. The image is great, connectivity is awesome (like you said, 1080p over component) and it’s LED-based, so you don’t have the pain in the ass of changing out a bulb.

If you had gotten one of the new 833-based sets from Mits, I’d probably tell you to keep it, but the 732s never impressed me that much. So if you are going to go trade it in, make sure it’s the new Sammy.

(lemme dig up the model for you)

    Ahh, here it is HL-T6189s

Also provides HDMI 1.3 support if you decide to get a PS3 at some point. Also supports 1080p on *all* inputs, 120hz imaging for a smoother picture and less “ghosting”, a game mode to improve response time during gaming, and a nice thin form-factor.

    Full specs here.

Looks to be about $2600 or so, probably pricier than your 732 ($2k?)

  11. Joe Says:

yeah, i looked into that one, it is considerably more expensive than the 65″ 732 model i bought for 1500. I also got a 4year everything included warranty from bestbuy that will cover the bulb at least once for 250$.

So, for 700$ more I can get the new sammys are ~2400$ at the very least for the 61″ model. Maybe within my 30day return policy the price will drop a little bit, haha.
