Microsoft “Fixed” Vista Copy Speed Issues

AeroXperience reports that Microsoft has released a patch (not yet on Windows Update) for Vista-based operating systems that “fixes” the file-copy performance.

I say “fixes” because if you are using Vista, you know that copying, deleting, moving files (yes, basic operations) are magnitudes times slow than they were in XP… no idea why. If for some reason you have to copy a directory with a lot of small files, the time it takes to complete the operation grows exponentially… I’m talking like 10mins for 2mb worth of tiny files… it’s so goddamn broken it’s unbelievable.

But as AeroXperience’s test show, Microsoft has managed to improve the speed by 50%… so instead of the performance being “fuck this, I’m buying a Mac”, it’s more on par with “God this blows… a Mac would be cool…”

Nice Microsoft… at least you are solving the hard problems at Redmond! (Copy… Delete… Move…)

I disabled “Remote Differential Compression” on the windows features and copy, delete are now as fast as xp (or kind of).

    inunda,
Very interesting… are you doing local file operations or ones across a network to a NAS or network share or something?

  3. inunda Says:

Hi. Local file operations worked better after that but didn’t try network share ops. However gonna remove Vista. A simple thing as file ops is driving me nuts. Back to XP… again :(

    inunda,
Thanks for the tip for the folks that have to stay with Vista, I’ll pass it along to some of my friends.

Sorry to hear you gotta do an OS reinstall… it’s really not too surprising given Microsoft can’t seem to do anything right.
