Michigan Govt Shuts Down

Life & World

Apparently there is a law in Michigan that the state govt cannot function while the budget isn’t balanced. Unfortunately it’s one of the most economically depressed states and it seems that is exactly what has happened.

It looks like the governor proposed a “comprehensive” list of items to bring them out of this budget crisis 7 months ago, but the legislature neither accepted nor rejected it and their inactivity has lead to this. I can understand not agreeing with the governor, but I wonder what the reasoning was behind simply not acting at all for 7 months and sitting on their hands?

The shutdown is actually pretty serious. While most state-provided services like schools and health care will remain “open”, they are open on a limited basis. Also police will only be available for emergencies and the police stations themselves will be closed to the public.

The rest of the specifics can be found in the FAQ.
