Media Temple Grid Failed Again

Ok the site was just down again for a few hours with exactly the same problem I reported before… In a fit of rage a friend of mine pointed me to this blog post from the (mt) team explaining why the MySQL outtages occur so often (abusive users). It sounds like when you become abusive with your usage, you are automatically moved onto a quarentined MySQL Container instance… that’s pretty slick… I hope they move all the crap-bags off my shared server so I stop going off line.

I feel like someone just drove a giant dump-truck onto my shared grid… and parked it on my pipes. You can’t do that

Assuming this isn’t a daily occurrence, I think I will hold out for another few weeks before figuring out alternative hosting plans. What a pain in the ass.

Update #1: Just got another MySQL Out of Memory error updating this post… SUPER DUPER

Update #2: Media Temple just called me on the phone (Scott) to let me know that they have enabled a MySQL Container on my account to temporarily work around the outtages I’m running into:

Media Temple MySQL Container

They are going to check what’s going on on their end and call me back and let me know what’s up. I never expected that call, so it was a nice surprise. Good customer support is probably worth double the price for just about any service.

I’m getting this same problem today. I’ve submitted a support ticket. One query keeps bombing when initialized today, it worked for 2 weeks straight and I haven’t changed it. Hopefully they will get back to me. BTW- this is my 3rd attempt at hosting with media temple. I don’t think I will continue hosting after my year is up.

    Brandon,
The trick for me was eventually MediaTemple gave me a MySQL “Container” and all my problems went away, but I wouldn’t pay for it, they comped it.

Have you always been on the same GS account and had the same database problem with it?

If you use dnscoop to lookup the additional machines on your GS server, you’ll probably find that they sell those things up to 60+ people per server.

I do have to say that since I’ve gotten the MySQL container things have been smooth sailing… I love the admin interface and the functionality available with the GS services… but had I kept having the problems I *was* having, I would have gone right back to my $9/mo GoDaddy account that worked fine. (TIP: you might try that out, it’s cheap)
