If you are in the market for an HDTV, I’d suggest waiting. For 52″ and lower sized LCD is the way to go, EngadgetHD is covering the explosion of LCD-based announcements coming out of manufacturers right now.
Pioneer and Panasonic are both hanging in the Plasma camp, hoping to make a go of it until the end. (Un)fortunately Pioneer makes one hell of a plasma TV and it’s not likely that plasma fall off the earth anytime soon.
With Sony rounding out it’s RPTV offerings this year with some refreshed sets, but continuing to win praise for it’s Bravia LCD series, how much longer until Sony gets their Bravia’s up to 60+ sizes and phases out the SXRD sets? My guess, 2 years.
Mitsubishi seems to be hanging on to the RPTV market with a kung-fu grip, announcing that their laser-based sets will be hitting stores next year using lasers for the light source instead of lamps (old) or LEDs like Samsung is currently doing.
RPTV probably has 3 years left in it as there is no bigger bang for your buck when it comes to 60″+ sized TVs. Plasmas get insanely expensive at that price ($8800?) and I’ve only seen one Sharp Aquos that was 65″, and I think it was $10k.
