Lohrville’ sent along some very interesting information pertaining to the lifespam and cost of replacing rear projection TV lamps. Here is the chart for quick reference:

I did some digging and found the first trick to finding lamps online is to search using the word ‘lamp’ not ‘bulb’, I couldn’t find anything using ‘bulb’ and was starting to think there was some universal conspiracy. Then I switched my search term to ‘lamp’ and viola, all better.

Anyway, it was hard to nail down a price for lamps as projector lamps tend to be like 2x the price, so yes the Mitsu lamps I was finding were like $465, but then I found lamps like this one on eBay for last years Mitsu TVs for $189, but you have to install it in your old housing. I dug up some other prices like for Sony XBR1 bulbs, Samsung bulbs, and more on eBay.

What I learned from this entire process is that you better get 1 or 2 bulb replacements in your warrenty on your new TV or just call your local BB or CC and ask them how much the bulbs are, tell them yours just burned out, because searching online for this stuff (without a model number) is a pain.

[...] Contrary to the original post I made here covering some lamp replacement costs for different TV manufacturers Gordon has dug up information from a retailing citing the wholesale cost of replacement lamps for Mitsubishi sets at $225… a very far cry from the $500 number previous reported by DLP TV Review. I declare shenanigans on that entire chart especially with Sony in the top spot. Sony has never claimed a 1st place position in history for anything related to cost, and I doubt they would start now. I have an inkling that all rear projection lamps cost in the neighborhood of $2-300, none lower and none higher. [...]
