yeah i agree i only wanted the i phone becuase it looked so flashy and pretty. Plus it made me look like i had loads of cash. But when i looked closely the phone is thicker than i thought, the camera is shit, and there is no fricken bluetooth!!

I love my iPhone I used it to post this!!
3g sucks so buy the 1st generation and unlock the thing. Mine uses t-mobile, unlocking was easy with all of the great hacks out there

Riyad: The latter link, to the iPhone Ubuntu Syncing Howto, is the one to which I was referring. To clarify, it is necessary to jailbreak because the only way to mount the iPhone is through an SSH connection via wifi. So in addition to his ubuntu PC, Erik will also need to have a wireless router, or access to a wifi network that allows static ip addresses. In addition to music and video, GTKpod can sync Contacts, Calendar, and Notes. I haven't tried the Amarok method, so I am not sure if it offers these features, as well.

Jim, Great followup. Just for reference sake, did you mean this iPod Ubuntu Howto page? Also I found this iPhone Ubuntu Syncing Howto. I didn't see information on syncing the data services (like calendar, notes, etc.) just the music stuff, and I think video. Either way all handy to have.

You definitely can sync your iPhone with Ubuntu.

First you need to jailbreak it with iLiberty+ (much, much better than Ziphone) then install GTKpod in Ubuntu.

The iPod page on the Ubuntu Wiki explains the whole process very well.

Sorry for my delay… I’m syncing my iPhone with a Vista box. I wish I could sync with Ubuntu, but you gotta use iTunes.

I don’t have any real good power user tips or apps. I love the Google apps’ support in the iPhone. I use Google Reader more then anything else.

I’m really hating life without an IM client, but I have no doubt we’ll have plenty of options in June when all the new 3rd party apps start showing up.

yeah agreed. I don’t think the cache is very big either.. less than 1MB I believe. I remember reading about it somewhere on someone’s dev blog but yeah, we should be able to set that to like 1GB if I wanted.

Actually Safari does have a browser cache albeit pretty small. The page reload thing you are talking about is only seen on certain pages. Many times like iphone.digg.com I don’t get page reloads when I come back to that tab.
