I was really surprised to see this news today. I know that in response to the Core 2 Duo benchmarks AMD announced quad-core chips for next year in their top end gamer line of chips, so I figure that next year Intel will release a prototype of a quad-core chip later in 2007 to compete and we would start this war all over again. Instead it seems Intel is ready to go with a quad-core chip by this holiday season! For some details on the new chip:
- Chip name is ‘Kentsfield’
- 2.66Ghz Quad Core (2x Core 2 Duo E6700 chips)
- 8MB L2 Cache
- Power usage goes to 110W (Back to what the biggest P4s use wasn’t it?)
- Intel 975X Chipset w/ 1066Mhz FSB
- $999 Extreme price point (Although the X6800 is $1200 at Newegg for some reason, so maybe market price may be more? NOTE: The X6800 price seems to be falling slowly)
In addition to this news Hannibal has done a great writeup over at Ars covering what both companies are bringing to the table with a little less details about the AMD part because it was recently (this week I believe) taped out and isn’t to be released until mid-2007.
