Well it looks like some (the slower ones) of the new Core 2 Duo chips are finally in stock at Newegg now:
One thing I’m surprised to see on the slower chips is how many reviews/votes there are already… people must be building these machines up as fast as they can get their hands on them. I’m somewhat surprised to see 3 reviews on the 6800 Extreme already, but not all that surprised. I do have to note that Intel didn’t go for the $999 “I hate money” pricing on the 6800 Extreme, but instead opted for the $1,255 “Go fuck yourself if you buy this” pricing. That’s an interesting tact to take with consumers, especially considering that the next one down, the 6700 is $699… so something must have happened between 2.66ghz and 2.93ghz that caused the price to almost double. I’m guessing here of course that with enough cooling you could easily clock the 6700 up to the speed of the 6800, but let’s forget that for a moment and just assume that Intel wants everyone buying it’s top of the line chip to feel it’s monopolistic wrath.
While I’m just as excited as everyone else for the Core 2 chips, especially with the low power usage and what that will mean on the mobile platforms, I’m curious to see how this AMD Quad-core setup does when they push that out to compete. A little crash IMO, but we’ll wait and see.
