Well that’s a shocker… it looks like the incredible network of closed-circuit television security cameras in London (and slowly being built out here in the US in most major cities) is actually not doing a damn thing to curb petty theft which was the entire platform building the stupid thing stood on in the first place. (We actually covered this before)
Having just been to London a few months ago I do have to say that the CCTV network is retardedly expansive with obvious (and some not-so-obvious) cameras in your face everywhere you go and everywhere you look.
Then you see an example of what the monitoring stations look like and it’s no surprise that a handful of people sitting around watching 50 monitors all day with constantly-switching data feeds isn’t an effective deterrent against crime. I also like in this picture particularly that they have TV broadcasting in the bottom center box… that’s a nice touch. Almost a quarter of a billion pounds to build out the security network, it does nothing to deter crime and they are just watching TV at work. SCORE.

Washington DC has started using cameras to deter crime.

Davin,
I’d be very curious to see how effective they’ve been in actually deterring or solving crime.
That is a data-point that I think is very important… since the introduction of all the cameras, have the number of crimes actually *decreased*? From the London data set, we see that solving the crimes that do occur is still as unlikely, but if the cameras everywhere have generally caused a dip in crime, that is worth something I think.
