Ok so I grabbed the Dark Messiah of Might and Magic demo off of Steam and tried it out and here’s my verdict: awesome. You can check out GameSpot for some more information and screenshots on it (check out the movies). To be honest when I saw the movies I didn’t think much of it, but after downloading the demo some of the things I loved were:
- Gore: Fighting and dismembering baddies doesn’t try and fake the gore, it’s a vicersal experience.
- Sound: Sounds are great, very positional
- Physics: They really come into play in the game, smashing crates over people’s heats, knocking people off of ledges by throwing a barrel at the back of their heads, blowing out the supports from wooden platforms to cause the contents to come crashing down, riding lifts and other things in the environment, accurate world calculations, for example, shooting an arrow WAY across the screen into a support with a baddy on it, even though you are still like 5 mins of puzzles away from them and watching them fall down and die, adds to the realism, etc.
- Graphics: Really great design, very detailed and moody. Lots of HDR and bump mapping to touch off textures to their fullest.
- Fast Paced: The fighting and sword-play is fast paced for the folks used to Oblivion, especially with the daggers which you hold and attack in awesome combos with, lots of cross-slashing back and forth, looks awesome from first person perspective
- Magic Effects: This is one of the coolest parts, for example, when you turn on touch of fire or whatever the fire spell is, your hand glows just barely as you hold it out infront of you BUT there are heat waves subtley comming off of your hand that you can see, it looks totally awesome
Oh and here are some screenshots:
