HP has just dropped news about their upcoming netbook the “Mi”, and besides running Ubuntu 8.04 it is actually rocking a completely custom UI designed by HP specifically for the Netbook.

Looking nothing like Canonical’s Ubuntu Netbook Remix distribution, it seems that HP went back to the drawing board with this and implemented their own interface completely.

From what I’ve read it seems like it is really locked down and you can only add applications that HP approves through their app installer. From a support standpoint I see why they would do that, but the first thing I would probably do is wipe it and put a fresh OS install on it that is not so locked down.

True… although I wonder how something like this would fare with our parents or a less tech-savvy user? Could be pretty badass if they add touch-screen support “Here mom, use this, just push on what you want to do”…

Good point. If my wife were wanting a Netbook I would consider it for her. Although she is comfortable with Win XP too.

You know, from what we’ve seen with Windows 7, and how it’s just Vista un-broken, I’m hardly compelled by it and think something like a MacBook, or like you said, a functional NetBook makes a lot more sense for spouses or even myself just for couch-serfing… it’s really too bad. Windows XP had the performance and simplicity (and battery life) but it’s getting long in the teeth… and Vista/Windows 7 has brought us a rediculous level of complexing with not that much of a bump in utility.
