rannel -- is that the new sidekick LX or the older non-3G one? If it's the older one, both the sidekick and the G1 can use the same t-mobile edge network, it's just a matter of having the APN setup correctly (which is mentioned in the article AND likely under your system settings on the phone)

If it's 3G, they will both work on the T-mobile 3g network, and again imagine it's just an issue of having the APN setup correctly.

Just make sure you dupe the settings from 1 phone to the other -- it should work fine.

Well I have a sidekick and a G1 and I want to alternate betweeen the two, so what am I supposed to do, is there a way to get the sidekick to work on the g1 plan or should I change my plan to the sidekick plan and get my G1 working on it?

twin817,

T-Mo has been cracking down pretty hard on "unintended data plan usage" -- so I wouldn't be surprised if they detected your device coming in on their EDGE network over the wrong APN and shut you down. That has been happening to some folks mis-using the BlackBerry data plan.

T-Mo *really* wants to push their Android-specific data plans, the $25 and $35 ones for the G1 and mytouch3G unfortunately. I don't know how much luck you'll have trying to work around this in the long run.

hello all,

my sister gave me her G1 to replace my sidekick LX. it was used by her before so when i booted up, i wasnt able to use it at all because she had signed in before (therefore it was locked) and TMO wouldnt unlock for me unless i added the extra $30 phone plan. (i only use it for data and pay 29.99 a month)

therefore, i did a hard reset (youtube this... takes less than a minute... resets entire phone as you just got it out of the box) and it finally gave me the option to create or sign in my google account. the entire network worked for me for maybe 5 or 6 hours. BUT after that, i could no longer use my Google Talk or AIM but i could use my text messages and could search google unless i turned on my wifi (weird)...

i changed the APN name to Hiptop.t-mobile.com as instructed above by JayPee... my googletalk works now but the internet doesnt...anymore ideas? THANKS SO MUCH....

Mark,

Unfortunately not. Word on the street is that T-Mobile really locked down the data plans to be used by the Android devices to the specific $25/$35 data plans -- no love with the Blackberry Data plans from what I'm hearing.

Hey, does this still work? I keep trying it and it says I need a different data plan.. I know some users commented saying that tmobile might have disabled it but I was wondering if there is another way around.. Thanks in advance for your help.

Bruno,

From what I've read T-Mobile has locked down their network pretty good to only allow G1's (and the upcoming "G2"/"MyTouch" devices) to only work with their associated data plans.

I started to see comments from folks that could get the G1s working on the older APN, but then they would get detected and shut off by T-Mobile after a week or so. So it seems T-Mo isn't messing around, they want you to use the specific data plan for that device.

The base G1 data plan I believe is still $25/mo so it's not too much more than what you are paying.

Manny,

When the original article was written, the tip applied to both the BlackBerry and Sidekick data plans converting over to the G1 with no problem -- unfortunately after a few weeks of folks doing this, it looks like T-Mobile got wise to the trick and a few people online reported getting their data plan turned off by T-Mobile.
