Heavenly sword looks to be pulling in roughly 7.5/10-style reviews for a few talking points that I think most people noticed from the demo:
- It’s beautiful
- It’s nothing new (God of War, minus all the entertaining gore)
- It’s short… SHORT (6-7hrs)
- It has no replay value (no multiplayer either)
I think this game is a perfect example of a design team that got carried away with movie-esque production concerns and lost sight of making a game. This isn’t necessarily an insult, it’s a phenomenal looking game, but it’s not a phenomenal-playing game. Loosing the gore in order to get a T-rating was one thing, so now all your awesome moves and attacks don’t really seem to do that much (knock someone down? as opposed to decapitate them? hmmm) and there just isn’t enough game there to keep you feeling good about your $65 purchase. You get home, and through a long Saturday could be done with the thing, at which point you get to just stare at the cover, or trying and trade it in for something else.
