Gizmodo has put together a great test of some of the most expensive (Monster Cable) and cheapest (MonoPrice) HDMI cables. For those that read the site regularly you know I’m a huge fan of MonoPrice.
The Gizmodo test looked at the following things:
- 720p over Short and Long Runs
- 1080p over Short and Long Runs
- 1440p over Short and Long Runs
Here Short refers to runs of 6ft, and Long refers to runs of 35ft and 50ft (although I don’t think any cables did well at 50ft).
The end result was that every cable did well at Short runs, which is what Robert Heron from DL.TV has said before, that with short runs most things will work fine. It’s the longer runs where quality will become very important.
It looks like the XtremeHD did the poorest in the tests while Monster faired better in the long-run 1440p tests and Mono, considering it’s about 1/5 or less the price of the Monster, did amazingly well too.
If you have an entertainment center that houses all your components that will plug into your TV, don’t waste your money with Monster, order your cables from MonoPrice.
If you are needing a 35-50ft run of cable AND sending 1080p over it, you will need to drop some serious coin on a nice-ass cable. You might consider doing some research as I’m sure there has to be something cheaper than Monster that is just as good.
