Just got done installing (1.4 GB) and playing the PS3’s Haze demo and I have this to say about it: It’s utter and complete garbage.
The graphics are horrible, possibly on part with Halo 2, but even that is a crap-shoot. They more accurately
remind me of how the Gears of War levels look briefly after a new level loads and the textures pop-in for a few seconds so everything is bland and smooth until those textures come in… that’s exactly how this looked but the entire time I was playing it.
In addition to the graphics being shitty the AI seemed ridiculous with the rebel’s AI in a few moments not completely kicking in until some of the previous ones had been dispatched… nice.
Also the environments are absolutely and completely static… shooting everything in the environment resulted in a shit-poor looking “bullet” texture getting added to it, but next to no effect and certainly no reaction.
The sound was OK but I couldn’t get over how absolutely last-gen this game looks… there is nothing in here salvagable; I would suggest Ubisoft just strike a deal for $200k with Sony and give this game away for free. It’s going to be $19.99 on PSN in a few month’s anyway.
In the mean time go watch the Gears of War 2 gameplay trailer for a game that doesn’t blow.

Play the actual game before you brand it “utter and complete garbage” or your opinion is just that.
Seriouly, You base your entire opinion of the game on a 140mb, 5 minute demo?
Fuck you, it’s people like you who help ruin the reputation of decent games simply because you’re too lazy to actually play it and make a valid decision based on how the whole thing played out. “Oh but other people agree with me, microsoftfundedreviews.com gave it 2/10 so that must mean it’s crap”
PLAY THE GAME! THEN YOU CAN REVIEW IT!

I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume you pre-ordered it and are feeling jipped for doing so… don’t get mad at me.
I justified why I felt the game was garbage pretty clearly, and the thing is, everyone agrees with me
I don’t remember the last time a 57% average score for a game meant it was “awesome” and every single reviewer was an XBox junkie… maybe I’m wrong, maybe ever single gaming site online was in cahoots to give this pile of shit game bad reviews JUST to make you angry… that’s a possibility.
I think I give a lot of games a fair shake, but when a lazy ass attempt from an exclusive title drops in my lap, covered in diarrhea, I call it what it is: diarrhea
I’d point out that I think Halo 3 is garbage too, so now I guess I’m a “ps3 fanboi” right?
ugggggg

I’m not saying Haze is “awesome”, it was actually very disappointing.
No you did not justify your opinion so don’t give me that crap, you played a 5 minute demo and branded the entire game as “utter and complete garbage”, as entitled to your own opinion as you are you must admit you were influenced by other reviews and you wont be the last, thats what happens with internet reviews;
Step 1 - one or two major sites (IGN) gives a game a good or bad review depending on how good the game is and/or how much they’re payed to do so.
Step 2 - Another large site gives a similar review.
Step 3 - smaller time sites like this one follow the trend and give it the same.
Step 4 - over time the vast collective majority of game sites on the net brand the game as “good” or “bad” depending on the original opinion. Its like a virus.
Just look at Lair, that game wasnt too bad but after IGN ect. branded it as rubbish people just accepted it as crap.
Same with Killzone, the orange box and many others, Haze didnt meet the expectations the hype and delays set for it and i was really dissapointed with it but in my opinion it still deserved AT LEAST 7/10
I know your as entitled to your own opinion as anyone else and hell, you might genuinely think its crap even if reviews were good. Although I only rented it so it did’nt really cost me much, I admit i’m really disappointed that it turned out so average and thats part of why I responded so angrily.
But at the very least you could play the game, people worked long and hard on it for you to sample a 5 minute, low res, starting level and Brand the entire thing “garbage” or “diarrhea”.

Ahh see, that’s the problem… we are coming from different directions on this.
I am inherently unimpressed with shooters. Halo 3 was stupid, Haze is diarrhea (you made me laugh when you used that) and Unreal Tournament 3 is totally average.
Unless a shooter does something really different (BioShock=Story, Gears of War=Grit/Gore, etc.) it’s really hard for me to see past the mediocraty of it and be impressed with it.
It’s true, some tallented people work on all sorts of shitty games, I’m sure Haze was no exception. What gets me so mad is that a couple of focus groups and play testers should have been able to say “Nice guys, you totally just made 2003’s Shooter Hit of the year…” and let them know why it was so average.
In my book, average doesn’t == 7/10, average == 5 or 6/10 and equates to a “don’t buy”. A 7 out of 10 is a “good rental, safe buy IF you like the genre” where an 8 out of 10 is a “pretty safe buy for everyone” 9 and 10 would be “fucking go buy this right now”.
Sorta like grades in school.
I review things from the angle of telling someone if *they* should go cough up $65 for it, not from the rental angle… you can rent anything you want, it’s cheap and easy. But purchasing is a hard decision that’s why average gets dinged so hard in my book.
In closing, I’m actually glad you thought it was an OK game, but I need to convey to readers that paying $65 for diarrhea is a bad idea, they can take and digest my decision from there.
Honestly I’d say I give games a really goddamn fair cut (Time Crisis, Kane and Lynch, Uncharted). But when no effort shines through there are too many other games that *deserve* the attention/praise so I declare bags of shit and move on.
As far as playing more than 5mins, I can’t argue with you there… if someone wants to send me a copy I’ll be happy to play through it and give a formal review.

i hate people who try do say what your saying, when you try to say gears of war is an amazing game and when people ask you why you say “grit and gore”. gears of war is the definition of a mediocre game (besides graphics which are really good) but the game has almost no story and the same gameplay as any game with cover system, but people say its innovative and different because of “grit and gore”
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Tony, you can hate me all you want, and you can even sorta-hate GOW of you want, but you have to admit that they near perfected (pioneered?) that style of a cover system… it really is brilliant.
As far as the gory/violence/grit of it, that’s huge and the style of the game and sales that it managed to pull of speak to that directly. Rainbow Six has an equally as good cover system and a better weapons system, but no where near the same art styling, and that series never breaks and stays in top-10 charts for long. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fun game with friends (co-op is great) but it’s not a Gears.
As far as Haze… man you guys *really* need to stop shit-talking this post and go buy it. I *have* it… it’s laughable, I’m not kidding… it really is laughablely bad.
The character models are surprisingly good, the dialog/story is a waste of time, and the environment/effect graphics… basically everything that isn’t other characters is *garbage*.
Not “oh that’s just my opinion” garbage… I mean shit… it looks terribly.
Do me a favor if you have the demo installed, and shoot down a rebel then back up about 20 feet and keep shooting the ground where he died, even after the body disappears… tell me that little 2D “spark” sprite that keeps popping up isn’t pure gold… it actually made me laugh cause it looks like something straight out of Duke Nukem 3D.
I’m honestly not trying to be a dick, but the difference between these two titles is *glaring*.

Uncharted: Drakes fortune used the same cover system as gears (probably better as it allowed more movement) and had FAR better graphics, FAR better animations and physics, a FAR better story, basically it was a FAR better game in every way except online because uncharted had no online.
Gears is good no question, but so is Haze, your opinion is not fact so stop acting like it is, you may not like the game as is the trend but some people dont like gears, opinion is still only opinion.
July 4th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
I have a feeling you haven’t played any of these games. We are quite familiar with uncharted and it’s cover system was *not* like Gears. I know I saw a few reviewers say things like “Gears-like-cover-system” and that’s just not true.
While the graphics of Uncharted were excellent, I don’t even know how you could make the “physics” comment with a straight face… the game was almost completely static environments, there were no physics-based puzzles or experiences in that game sans for throwing a grenade against a wall *maybe*. But in fairness, it’s not like Gears of War is a real physical game either, that’s a pretty static environment as well.
As far as the “your opinion is not fact”, in most cases you are right, but in this case (of Haze being a shitty game) it is fact.
I’m normally not this combative, but your butterfly logic and whimsical arguments are rubbing me the wrong way.
I may admit that *some* people enjoy Haze, fine… lots of people like bad games, but I’ll never admit that Haze is infact a great game and I just don’t know it.
That’s like saying “diarrhea with chocolate on it doesn’t taste THAT bad…” umm dude… it’s diarrhea!
July 27th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
haze is definitely shit
July 28th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Agreed… I went and picked it up to play through it to see if it was possible I was wrong… I wasn’t… it’s shit.
The weird part, is that it’s a shit game with *slight* shimmers of promise in different scenes where you saw a nice design shine through or a cool effect… but wow, the scripting, story, gun play and graphic are just terrible.
