Halo 3 Runs at 640p

Gaming, Technology

Incase you were wondering, VE3D has the scoop.

Halo 3, in all it’s last-gen glory is running at 640p, meaning 640-vertical lines. The XBox then takes the image and scales it to whatever you have the console’s output set to.

The best part, incase you didn’t already notice, is that it does no post-processing on the image like Anti-Aliasing, so for the folks with nice big TVs, you may have noticed, especially near the end of the game where a lot of the scenes are silhouetted, that the jaggies on the image are insanely bad. Well that’s why.

Also something else to note for the “XBox has 1080p!” fan boys out there, no it doesn’t. Almost all the big games render at *most* 720p. Maybe some of the XBox Live Arcade games are infact 1080p, but the XBox doesn’t have the horse power to push a full 1080p HD image.

    A couple of comments…

So, does this mean that Halo3 is really Halo2 in “almost-HD”? :)

Also, if you read the linked forum in the VE3D article, you’ll notice that alot of PS3 games run at strange resolutions, and then scale.

In fact, many of them run at a LOWER resolution on the PS3 than the 360 (The Darkness, Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground).

I think to make a fair comparison between 360 and PS3, you’d have to look at native games on the PS3 (Heavenly Sword and the like) and compare them to 360 native games.

So many publishers are just porting games straight over on a compatability layer to the PS3 right now, that I wouldn’t be surprised if they had to bump the res down to get it to run the same speed as we’ve seen the PS3 is more complex to code for than the 360.
