For all the gamers out there sitting on the fence waiting to either decide between Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero: World Tour (or both, possibly), we are here to tell you the following:
- Unless you have to have Guitar Hero, the instrument issues (drums specifically) make us recommend you get Rock Band 2.
Very early reviews suggested that some widely reported drum issues were popping up along side some smaller issues with the touch-sensitive neck. The drum issues alone (the instrument that was suppose to make the title) are so commonly reported that it’s enough to take notice and want to avoid them for now. Other issues are mis-hits, hit detection and loosening cymbals, although the feel of the drums is reported to be quite good when they work.
Combining controller issues (which is unbelievable given the shit Rock Band took for it) mixed with the inability to import old tracks from previous Guitar Hero games and the massive lack of DLC available now, Rock Band looks to be a clear choice for music fans.
I also liked GameTrailer’s review summary of the Music Creation Tool, the one thing that was going to push Guitar Hero: World Tour beyond anything out there: “It’s quite possibly one of the most complicated user-creation app ever included in a console game”. You cannot add vocals, sound quality of the instruments seem to be MIDI-based and end results sound like garbage.
Even alongside good graphics, excellent character and instrument creation the Guitar Hero team hasn’t been able to jump beyond the mistakes made in Rock Band 1 and still carries the limitations in gameplay inherent in the Guitar Hero series (must play to pass) making us recommend to either wait until all the instrument issues are fixed or wait and see what your friends get before deciding.

I took an informal poll of my friends that picked up GH:WT already and over half of them have an issue with their drums and a couple have issues with their guitars. I still plan to rent GH:WT eventually but Rock Band 2 is still holding my interest easily. All the RB2 DLC probably helps that since I’ve got new songs and challenges each week. When I finally get tired of playing the RB2 songs I’ll then get to renting GH:WT.

Jigsaw, thanks for the input, that’s a really horrible ratio. I know that the GameTrailers, GameSpot and IGN crews *all* had issues with their drums and I think just 2 with the touch-sensitive neck… although they all agreed it was mostly useless since looking down to check finger positioning wasn’t an option during gameplay.
I am also hearing the same input about RB2 so far from friends, that when you add up all the DLC, the improved instruments, and all the refinements of removing complaints about the gameplay (making a band from characters and assigning instruments on the fly), it sounds like that’s the clear winner this season.
