It’s here, Good Old Games (GOG) Public Beta!
We covered the announcement of Good Old Games back in June. The idea behind the service being that the guys who brought you The Witcher, CD Projekt, have bought the rights to classic PC titles in order to recondition them to run on the latest operating system, making them DRM-Free, offering full support for the titles and releasing them at dirt-cheap actually reasonable prices.
The wait is over and the service is beginning to open it’s doors.
At the time of this announcement there are quite a few classic titles here all for damn-reasonable amounts, more specifically:
- Fallout 2 $5.99 (Great timing)
- MDK 2 $5.99
- Operation Flashpoint $9.99
- Freespace 2 $5.99
- Giants: Citizen Kabuto $5.99
- Kingpin: Life of Crime $5.99
With the complete list of all games being somewhere in the ballpark of 50 titles. My guess is that any gamer that has been into games since the 90s will recognize more than half those titles as something they played and loved.
All content is delivered digitally at time of purchase and remember, this isn’t DRM’ed at all. You can throw this onto a backup disk after buying it, install it on your PC and/or install it on your laptop for when you are traveling but want to keep playing your favorite old game.
The other thing I liked about the service is the detailed breakdown of the game on the download page, including the user rating (very important), original release date (handy if you are trying to remember your old favorite title) along with a slew of free-to-download resources for the game, like the Manual, In-game Soundtrack, etc.
How badass is that?
Thanks Kotaku!

That is pretty cool. I just found my Fallout 2 disc the other day. I wish I had found it a month ago. No way I can get all the way though it now before Fallout 3 releases. Next time I’ll have to check here and just buy it again for $6.
