Robert, I am not sure if this will help, but I ran through this setup yesterday and in preparation I installed the package ipodslave. I also installed amarok-xine and amarok-engines just for fun. All worked well and I have full functionality with Amarok now. Hope this helps.

Robert I'm glad to hear it helped although I'm sorry to hear you are fighting a battle as odd as that. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you on this end ;)

Thanks for the info on how to sync using Amarok itself. I've been fighting GTKpod trying to get it to work, but to no availe. Been pulling my hair out. Now I just need to figure out why the Ipod can't be accessed through Amarok while in KDE!!

[...] I hope this general Ubuntu started guide has proven to be helpful to any non-Linux users that aren’t sure about Linux yet but want to give it a try. If you’d like more information about more advanced topics like getting your iPod working and what using Ubuntu Linux as a primary desktop is like for a week along with all the quirks I discovered and solutions (at the end).
Thanks for pointing me here, Riyad. This was the next thing on my todo list and you've saved me hunting around for instructions. Banshee looks very interesting too, although I'll save trying it out until after I've got my ipod and podcasts downloading and updating reliably through Amarok. Cheers.

Thanks for the heads up on Banshee, Riyad - I'll have to go apt it tonight; I have been using my Windows desktop for my various ipodities simply because of the lack of valid podcast and synchronization support in Gnome Ubuntu, but I'm never in the office where my desktop is, so I forget to synch my podcasts on a regular basis (or would that be that I remember to synch them on an irregular basis). I didn't really want to go down the Amarok road if I didn't have to (because of the non-standard repos and the whole QT/KDE thing).
