Ok so I finished Gears of War, and here is my final, take-away impression:
- Beautiful game (visually/audio-ably-ly)
- Too expensive / Too short / Total Lack of Story
- Final Score: 7.4/10
That’s pretty much it, for a $70 game to last roughly 6 hours is complete bullshit in my opinion. I can surely play through it again on hardcore, then again on insane and unlock all the unlockables and high-five my imaginary friends when I get the achievement for killing everything with the chainsaw in a single round but I really didn’t like the game enough to do that.
The only games that I can play over and over again are games with incredible deep characters where the dialog and game itself (story) is graph driven, meaning you determine the path of the game as you go. If you are thinking “Well you can, there are 3 parts in the game where you have to select LEFT or RIGHT, even though you can see each path from the other” that doesn’t count. I’m talking Knights of the Old Republic here, TRUE character development and story telling.
If it’s not that, I’m bored stiff playing through a game a second time.
Truth be told, now that Gears (one of the most anticipated games) is out, and I passed it already… I’m a little bummed out and disenfranchised with the XBox 360 right now. Rainbow Six Vegas is graphically awesome and a fantastic game, but as with all the Rainbows, it’s not a story driven adventure game. It’s an awesome tactical game… I’m just not feeling that right now.
I’m looking at getting a Wii with Zelda to get over this funk, but after reading two reviews that actually warn HDTV owners to prepare for a horrible signal, I’m a bit hesitant until I’m positive I can get my hands on the component cables and not use the shit composite ones that come in the box.
