Mercenaries 2: World in Flames has had us pumped since last year when they stated showing the thing off. The whole “if it can’t be blown up, it doesn’t belong in the game” adage that the team lives by is gold. It looks like this year at GDC the team has dropped a bunch of Co-Op player movies showing what that looks like.
As far as gameplay goes, it looks very similar to Crackdown, which unfortunately suffered from the harsh reality that once you got into the game, each player would inevitably end up running off and doing their own thing because the game was so over the top you really didn’t run the risk of dying unless you sucked balls.
I’m starting to think that Mercenaries 2 will suffer from that same thing, just check out the game play and see how there really is no reason for the players to work together, they can just run around wrecking shit like crazy on their own time and not get a sense of “oh yea, we are doing this together”.
If you haven’t played Crackdown you might have a hard time understanding how this won’t be awesome, you really have to play a truly sandboxed, over the top arcade-style game with another person and realize that you almost never end up doing stuff together during the actual game and that ends up sucking.

Very cool. I’m looking forward to blowing some stuff up on co-op.

Jigsaw,
Out of curiosity did you play Crackdown in co-op?

Yes, I did. We did not play through the story as much as run around and just kill guys and kick each other off the roof while trying to snipe.

Hahha, exactly. It was a blast for like 3 hours and then it sorta wore off, I haven’t played it in 8 months and the other night we busted it out to try and have some fun and about 8mins we were totally burnt out… it’s almost like the novelty of it gets all used up and you just can’t re-enjoy it with a strategic twist to it (like a Rainbow Six game).
Posted another update to the issue with some more co-op gameplay, it looks fun as hell, but I think it will suffer the same fate.

u may have not heard but they have added a certain range as to how far away you can be from your friend.

Anonymous, thanks for the heads up! I hadn’t heard that actually.
Do you know if it was a technical limitation (like if you get more than 5miles away from the other player you get dropped), or was it intentional, to encourage co-op play?
