Interesting post a few days old over on the Adobe blogs covering the Flash 9 porting work that is taking place to finally deliver the updated Flash platform to Linux.

  • General graphics: X11
  • GUI elements (dialog boxes): GTK
  • Audio I/O: ALSA
  • Camera input: Video4Linux, API version 1
  • Threads: POSIX threads
  • non-HTTP Networking: BSD sockets
  • SSL: OpenSSL
  • IME: you know what? I don’t think we’ve settled on this one yet…

He clarified later (as the replies to the blog entry became numerous) that the choice for V1 of Video4Linux was based around the number of V1 drivers that existed. Many people pointed out that V1 is slated for removal from the kernel soon so no word if they are officially going to adopt V2 instead. Another benefit is that Flash aparently already has code based on V1 which makes delivery easier.

Folks who were requesting Gstreamer support for the a/v got a firm reply from Mike of “no, just no”. Not sure why, but it looks like Gstream is not going to get any love with Flash 9 using ALSA instead. The choice of GTK was a good one as many people recognized for the fact that it makes integration with Firefox easy, being the preferred browser to support.
