Firefox 3.0 - All About Offline Web Applications

PCMag did a damn interesting writeup of the new features coming in Firefox 3.0, namely the offline functionality is getting a swift kick in the pants and will make the first steps necessary to allow full web-application offline application… think of Gmail offline, Google Docs, Docs & Spreadsheets, etc… all offline.

It looks like the support for this offline functionality starts with 3 requirements:

  1. DOM storage (Store the app locally)
  2. Offline execution model (How do you execute an offline app?)
  3. Synchronization (once you go back online again)

The idea here that Firefox 3.0 becomes the platform upon which Google Office is written and digs into the Microsoft Office install base. Imaging Firefox 4.0 installing with pre-registered links directly to Google Office in it’s toolbar? Now imagine Google getting Dell, Gateway, Sony, etc. to pre-install Firefox on all desktops they ship.

Now imagine half those folks getting their Office trial expiring on them and decide to try out Google Office instead… now in 10 years we’ll have a different kind of monopoly to deal with. My guess is 2 years before Microsoft announces a partner ship with Yahoo to bring their own office suite to the browser platform like Google did.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.
