Far Cry 2 is Looking Awesome

We have been covering Far Cry 2 quite a bit recently, not because we were that much of fans of the original or even that big of Crysis fans, but because Far Cry 2 is actually surprising us with how good it’s looking.

Following a recent Far Cry 2 media blitz, the Ubisoft team working on the title have dropped two new resources recently that we feel for “must sees” for anyone that was remotely interested or generally likes FPSs. First is the trailer that offers excellent music and good direction with regards to a trailer:

Second we have a bit of a “How To” tech demo of the game, showing how injured enemies can change the dynamics of clearing an environment as well as how you can make use of physical/dangerous items in your environment. I would seriously recommend watching atleast the 2nd half of the video that covers fire, propane, tanks, explosives, vehicles sabotaging chase vehicles with explosives and then blowing them to hell as they chase you.

Lastly we have a Developer Walkthrough that covers saving, sleep sequences, maps and navigation, full phases of night/day and completing a mission at night. It looks like everything is focused heavily on the first person perspective, never taking you out of the first person mode when in control of the camera.

Another interesting aspect of mapping and navigation management is that you can scope-out resources as you play and they are auto-marked on the map. For example you scope out some health stations, snipers, vehicles, etc. all that gets added to your map either for planning or just for later reference.

Far Cry 2 is coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 simultaneously this Fall. Looks like Ubisoft is going to have a serious engine for future titles after this game launches and we’ll likely see Far Cry 3 and other FPS titles using the same engine after all the work that has been done to make this thing look amazing with full physical environments.

One big problem I had with Farcry was the A.I. From the videos they have shown it seems they have solved the small problems I had with Farcry. All the interaction the player can do with the A.I. looks interesting. I just hope Ubisoft can pull this one off.

I think this is the game that will make me want to upgrade to DX10 hardware

    Nunez,

I know what you mean, in Far Cry (and even to a degree in Crysis) you just had to shoot dudes a lot. No one really rushed you, although in Crysis I did see some rushing taking place but not a lot of flanking.

After Ubi pulled off Assassin’s Creed and the new Prince of Persia with that incredible art design I really have a lot of faith in them… it’s like they have this singular vision that they are executing smoothly across their games.

I’m very excited for this title.
