Looks like DreamHost is asking it’s users to setup .htaccess files to block GoogleBot because the DreamHost servers can’t handle the load (since they oversell those things like crazy):
According to the blog entry, customers of DreamHost are already discussing actively. That’s an interesting strategy… let’s break-it-down:
- Setup cheap servers
- Oversell them by a factor of 4 or more
- Setup absolutely ridiculous quotas and limits for even the cheapest account
- Kick users off your service that remotely come close to even trying to use half of those quotas
- Get more “DreamHost sucks” blog articles online than any other ISP..
- ???
- Profit!
So I’m not sure what Step #6 is in their business plan, but Steps 1-5 were executed like gold so far…
