Looks like DreamHost is asking it’s users to setup .htaccess files to block GoogleBot because the DreamHost servers can’t handle the load (since they oversell those things like crazy):

DreamHost Asking to Block GoogleBot

According to the blog entry, customers of DreamHost are already discussing actively. That’s an interesting strategy… let’s break-it-down:

  1. Setup cheap servers
  2. Oversell them by a factor of 4 or more
  3. Setup absolutely ridiculous quotas and limits for even the cheapest account
  4. Kick users off your service that remotely come close to even trying to use half of those quotas
  5. Get more “DreamHost sucks” blog articles online than any other ISP..
  6. ???
  7. Profit!

So I’m not sure what Step #6 is in their business plan, but Steps 1-5 were executed like gold so far…
