Coca-Cola has announced that it will be discontinuing the use of Sodium benzoate (AKA E211) in it’s Diet Coke drink.
Sodium benzoate has been used to to stop carbonated drinks from moulding but research has also linked it to DNA-damage (leading to cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease) and hyperactivity (A.D.D.) in young children.
It seems that the pressure consumers have been putting on Coca Cola for more natural products spurred the change (which is nice to hear the company responding favorably to customer demand). The phasing out of E211 began in January and will be completed by “the end of the year”.
The company also announced plans to remove it from it’s other drinks, but apparently drinks with higher fruit juice content still require sodium benzoate to keep them from moulding (e.g. Dr. Pepper, Sprint and Oasis) — it’s not used in Classic Coke.

Hi yeah I knew diet coke wasn’t great for your kids or for adults, but I love it. I think it is about time that they made diet coke more healthier.
It is good that Coca-cola has decided to stop using the chemical and is about time they took it seriously. It is amazing what chemistry can do. I mean who would have thought that E211 can cause cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease.
